Its been set so that you can't. Custom titles are meant to be bestowed upon people as honors, or for some other reasons. For example, we had a contest (which yankshater won) for a custom title, but in the changeover he lost his I think. Ha! Sucks for him.

But no amount of grovelling will change this. Stick with an avatar, some amount of order is necessary in the forum I think.
