If we get career-average hitting from JD Drew and Big Papi, career-average pitching from Curt Schilling and Bartolo Colon, career-average fielding from Julio Lugo, and middle-inning relief with an ERA below 5.00, along with what we've seen thus far, you'll be in trouble. And that's without considering Lowrie, Moss and Masterson.
JM, I find the BP Postseason Projections using ELO to be the best at this point of the season. They show the Red Sox as 59.7% likely to take the AL East this morning, with the Yankees 22.5% likely to win the division. The Rays have a 9.5% chance; the other two teams combine for the remainder. That suggests that the Yankees are very much alive; I'd agree with that.
The Yankees aren't, however, looking like favorites as we post here today.
