Did any of you guys see it? I get the feeling it was a hoax, and if it was, it was brilliant. It's pretty funny either way...

50-50 on it being a hoax versus Phoenix being zonked out of his mind. I know Phoenix has some sort of documentary going on with Casey Affleck, but I'm leaning towards, "This guy has problems."

Andy Kaufman's stunt was different in that he was a known comedian. Phoenix is not a comedian.

Either way, I think it will be spun that it was a hoax to save his reputation.

I haven't bothered to go back and look, but I saw someone suggesting that at some point you can see Phoenix trying not to laugh. It was either the worst interview I've ever seen, and Letterman did an amazing job to turn it into a hilarious segment, or a hoax, in which case they both did a great job.

"Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight!":lol:

The video, by the way, is no longer available on Youtube. So here's part of it:

I don't know man, I think there's a pretty decent chance dude is really just that weird. That was bizzare to say the least though.

You may be right, I'm starting to lean towards his just being that weird now. The people at Letterman had to know this, though... don't they usually do a pre-interview?

If Phoenix wasn't such a serious actor, I'd think this was some kind of Borat-esque character he was peddling into pop culture to lead into a movie. But who knows, maybe he's just giving a big middle finger to Hollywood.

And I agree with See Red, they usually do a pre-interview and if he was that fucked up, Letterman would've brought in Regis last minute to fill in
