I didnt put Fever Pitch, the story itself was nice but Jimmy Fallon annoys me but i love being able to watch us beat NYY in the 04 ALCS in the movie ha

personally i like Bull Durham and the Rookie the best. and i used to watch Angels in The Outfield and Sandlot all the time as a kid so there is some nostalgia there.

After reading the last few posts I've realized that there are many good movies about baseball.
One that has not been mentioned is "61" (I believed it was called). It was an HBO production about Roger Marrris breaking Babe Ruth's HR record. I'm not sure about the title. But it was very good.

That's a little gimmicky, and it's not really about baseball. Sport is the backdrop at best. That movie is a veiled effort to talk about child movie stars actually and some of the crap they put up with.

Anywho, I have to admit my ignoraice to a lot of these. Never really got a chance to see bull Durham, Fever Pitch or Eight Men Out. I did see Angels in the Outifeld but again, that's not really a movie ABOUT baseball. It's a movie that uses baseball to talk about something else.

The two really good movies ABOUT baseball that I've seen are The Natural, and Major League. The first one. Before they murdered Roger Dorn's character in cold blood and before Rachel Phelps was a TOTAL caricature.

(Anyone else read the book The Natural was based on BTW? It gets into a lot of stuff the movie doesn't touch)

Of the two, I think the Natural loses points because it's a little dated. It also loses points because it Disnifies the ending from the book. So I went with Major League, more or less by default.

Dojji
07-23-2009, 07:38 AM
No, it really isn't. It's related to baseball, it shows baseball as part of the action of the movie, but Rookie of the Year isn't really about baseball at all.

Has BTTM been officially declared non-canon?

I still wish they'd go back. A sensitive sequel still has a chance to be a good thing for the series and genre, and I don't think they told all the story that could have been told in the first two movies.

I sometimes try to imagine how that team would react to winding up under a Chuck Finley style, meddling enthusiast owner who thinks he knows more about baseball than he actually does. Or dealing with losing a beloved player to free agency. Or trying to deal with having a player out with a long term injury. There's definitely enough plot for another one if they ever decide to tell it.

Did you ever see the movie? Do you even know who Lou Gehrig is, you ignoramus?

Lou Gehrig made the most memorable speech in baseball history, while suffering from a debilitating disease that would take his life two years later. It has nothing to do with him being a Yankee, it had to do with his life, not his uniform.

lol.

But I still say the Natural - because it's supposed to be the way it was played in the early days of the game. When I say early days, I mean well before I was born. I don't really consider Baseball 1973 to now the "Best Years Of Baseball" like old Bud does, but the old glory days to me were the first 70 years of this century - or basically the history of the game before I was born.

So in that respect, I like the Natural more. And I really do like A League of Their Own for much the same nostalgic reason. Plus, I was like 11 when it came out and I was still playing and it was a time I was first getting into the Red Sox and, again, for the time it was released, it looked AMAZING.

I should read the book. "Pick me out a winner Bobby." and then THAT MOMENT still brings me crumbling to tears. :o

Right. They disnified the ending of The Natural for the movie. In the book Roy does not make the right choice -- and pays for it. In the end, as I remember it (haven't read the book in a decade) he winds up alone and screwed over by everyone. The last line of the book is Roy, alone, facing a kid holding a newspaper article declaring his permanent ban from the league and all his records repealed, and hearing the kid plead for him to "say it ain't so, Roy, say it ain't so!"
