View Full Version : Bashing Players without backing up with stats!

This should become a unwritten (now written) rule of talksox.com. If you are going to bash a player red sox player or otherwise you must back it up with stats of some sort. Obviously it might be a particular play or something that stats wouldn't come into the arguement.

Let's make this BB the best one out there, instead of a site that just bashes our beloved Red Sox players and World Champs!

I like that idea. Alot.

please...you guys act like stats are the world. There are more things that determine if a player is good or not than just stats. A lot of people lately only rely on stats for there arguements. That completely erases the human aspect of things. God forbid the player is having some personal issues that carry over onto the field and reflect in his stats (or lack of). And some players are entitled to have a week, or month, or year. For instance, jorge Cantu has like 23 home runs (im just ballparkin it, it could be 22 or it could be 24) compared to Derek Jeter who has 15...but I think we could all agree that Derek Jeter is a much better player than Jorge Cantu. This stats stuff is wayy overrated. While yes, stats are necessary to point out in discussions, they shouldnt be all that is looked at.

But.... comparing career numbers Is different. Better career numbers equal better player.

Quite honestly though, stats are helpful and i love them, but they can be useless. Quite frankly arguing about anything it seems now is useless.

Good idea. Some stats are great barometers (big word) to see how a player is doing.

But apparently, Cantu is a better homerun hitter than Jeter. Derek is a better player, but you know why, because the stats say so. Like Jeter's .390 OBP is better than Cantu's .315 OBP. Along with Jeter's .843 OPS over Cantu's .811 OPS. Stats are the telling thing as to how good a player is.

Other things should be considered, but stats pretty much own all.

like stats that would point to how many errors has cano made this season that drove in a run for the opposing team

But its true, probly like 7, all in the ninth

But to me, if you have the stats to back up a startemnt, and you know how to you them, nothing anyone can say, unless its something stupid like, ohh yea we'll I'm right and your wrong, can pprove you wrong

Your right arguing who is a "better" player isn't just about stats. My point is when someone says TEK calls a terrible game (pitch wise) back it up with number to prove your point, not just "my 12 year old little brother...". It took me 2 minutes to find the catcher ERA stat to back up my point that TEK is a great caller of pitches. This is no offense to anyone on the board. I just feel it would improve the board if people just stopped writing down the first thing they think about. Take some time, type your post, research your point of view, then re-read it and be sure it makes sense!

Why don't we have a reg board where members can post what's actually on their minds instead of holding it in because there's no stat to reflect what he/she is trying to get through? Makes sense uh?

Yeah that's a great idea! Don't you think the world would be a better place if everyone just made things up and we turned the world into pretend land? Talking out of your ass is not a good quality.

I actually think the original idea purposed is a good one. Threads about how Varitek is a bad defensive catcher make it look like our board is filled with morons. I know for a fact that if I was thinking about joining a board and saw topics as pointless, and without a base, as some of these have been I wouldn't even bother going through the thread ... I just wouldn't join. This rule would not only keep bashing to a minimum, it would also keep senseless arguements to a minimum, which makes for an overall better board.

Here you go again, when did I say that Tek was a horrible DEFENSIVE catcher? Anyways, if you want to make this board robotic like then go ahead, there's more to baseball then stats.. but if all of you want to be wannabe mini-theo's then do you ...

but overall....Cano is a great player...but they need to put bellhorn in when it is needed. Like the other night when Cano made an error and lost the game for the yankees. Granted that he is gorgeous...Looks arent going to help him win a game

And the board wouldn't be robotic. Theo isn't robotic. He's intelligent, and thats what we want the board to have. People that are the exact opposite of you ... intelligent.

It's a nice idea, but it won't be followed through. People are always going to bash a player in the heat of the moment if he makes an error or K's in a big spot. Nobody is immune from that.

whatever you say moneyball....all I know is even if Jeter was having a HORIBLE season, I would still take him over Cantu just for reasons that stats cant explain

Having an opinion and expressing it with some degree of intelligence is fine. Making personal attacks on members and using racial slurs is not. Try reading the real rules, and then applying them.
