The Yankees, after being spurned by Villone and not going after any other lefty reliever, are believe to be trying to nab Damaso Marte from Pittsburgh for reserve OF Kevin Thompson. This is from George King's article today. Marte would bring the yankees their left handed set-up type player that they are losing with the departure of Villone and would allow Mike Myers to stick as only a matchup lefty rather than a full inning reliever like he was used later in the yr as Villone was faltering. Here is the quote.

The Pirates and Yankees have talked about a trade that would bring lefty reliever Damaso Marte to the Yankees for outfielder Kevin Thompson. If Thompson is dealt, Bernie Williams could return as the fifth outfielder. Marte, 32 in February, is owed $4.7 million for 2007 and 2008. He could be protection against the Yankees losing Ron Villone and not signing Scott Schoeneweis.

If Kevin Thompson is enough to land Damaso Marte that's pretty lame.

The Sox should push a Hinske/??? deal for Marte.

I like Kevin Thompson, but I like Bernie more, so this would be a move I'd be happy with. Anyone know anything about Marte? The only thing I know about him is from MLB2K5

I've ALWAYS liked Marte, especially when he was with the White Sox. I think it would be great for the Yankees to bring him back to the organization. As much as I love Luis Sojo, seeing how Damaso Marte turned out makes me a little upset that we sent him packing in that deal.

Ooh..just OODLES AND OODLES of progress in three weeks....admit it...you guys are getting nervous. If the roles were reversed, I'd be.

It's okay to admit you're scared.:(

The only time I'll be nervous is if the deadline passes and Matsuzaka's not sporting a big red #18.

And even then I'll be furious, not nervous.

We knew from the start this thing was going down to the wire...why should we feel different now? We also knew the negotiations were going to be kept as quiet as possible and that there would be posturing on both sides. Again, why should we feel different now?

I will say that if next Saturday comes and Theo has failed I'll drive to Boston and kick him in the nuts myself. But for now there's no reason to worry about it.

I'm not concerned just yet because Boras is going to want the largest sum of money possible. I believe the Sox and Boras will meet somewhere in the middle, but a little farther towards the 15 mill that Boras wants. I'll say around 13mill/year for 4 years and a 5th year option. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox wound up dishing out 15 million/year either, though. Boras will wait to have Mastuzaka sign until the last few hours. I'm not concerned until 12:01 in the morning after the final day of negotiations.

I will be PISSED OFF if the Sox don't get this done. They owe it to their fans to bring this guy in after last year's abomination of a starting rotation. I will order Theo's head on a plate if he and the FO blow this.

Kicking him in the nuts is pleasing enough for you? I'll wanna go Casino Royale style on him.
