Default Yankees sign CJ Henry

http://www.nypost.com/seven/11222007...der_336018.htm

This is actually kinda funny. Henry was the major prospect dealt over for Bobby Abreu when the Phillies dumped him. The other player, Matt Smith, is recovering from TJ surgery.

Henry was our 1st round pick in 2005, who was subsequently moved to the outfield. The 5 tool prospect couldnt fucking hit. He hit .184 last yr in the minors for Philly and then asked for and was granted his release. Of note, he was fitted for contacts prior to the end of the season, and that is a big reason why he hit over .300 in the final month of the yr. That is most likely a fluke, and he most likely will not see the light of day past the FSL, but it is kinda funny that we got Abreu for absolutely nothing.

Everyone on these boards knew that right away when it was made. Three crap prospects for salary relief of Abreu and the late Cory Lidle

what I think is totally unlikely but kinda intriguing is...

Could you imagine if Henry actually breaks out after getting contacts and becomes one of our top prospects while Abreu is still our starting RFer? How ironic and funny would that be?

The Yankees and Cashman ate the Red Sox lunch on that one. It was probably the biggest bobble by the FO in the last three years. Abreu was a great pickup for a year to year short term commitment. I'd rather have him than Drew.

I really dont care about that trade anymore. Yankees got Abreu for 3 years, while the Sox got to see Drew hit a big grand slam (Game 6) as they came back 3 games to 1 against the Indians. I find it hard to believe that Drew will be what he was during the 07 season for the rest of his contract. From September on, he reignited his batting and was a big force in the lineup. A potential 20 HR/75+ RBI type season isnt out of the question for 2008

Exactly, the front office makes more good choices then bad and has 2 WS titles, really thats all that matters. Do more good then bad...

Guys, it's great to be the World Champions, and it is proof that the FO has made more good moves than bad. Does that mean we can't discuss the merits of their past moves? I think that is one of the primary activities on this forum. The Abreu deal was good for the Yanks and a flub by the Sox.

id rather have jd. i think drew has plenty of good yrs left in him. as you know, some players need a yr or 2 to adapt to big cities like ny and boston. i dont think drew is going to have many yrs where he hits 270 with 12 HRs or however many it was. plus, hes forgiven for everything since he had a monster postseason.

Prior to the 2006 season, or even for the sake of the arguement we'll say July 2006, if you were asked your preference between Bobby Abreu and J.D. Drew would you seriously have said Drew? I find that hard to believe. Not saying Drew didnt do a good job this year, but what I am saying is that it looks a little to me that the basis for your comment is because Drew is the one wearing the Red Socks right now while Abreu is in pinstripes.

As for C.J. Henry, he has been a flop since being drafted. but I do remember reading some pretty bright scouting rports on him back then. Hopefully something works out for him, that would certainly be nice.

Prior to the 2006 Season

2005:
JD Drew 145 OPS+
Bobby Abreu 126 OPS+

2004:
JD Drew 157 OPS+
Bobby Abreu 145 OPS+

J.D. Drew played 72 games in 2005 with 252 ABs. He had just signed that big contract with the Dodgers after playing 2004 in ATL, and was considered by many mothing more than an overpaid, overvalued injury-prone player. Now you had no problem throwing that one stat out in which Drew edged Abreu those 2 years, but in 2004 Abreu hit 30 homers with 105 RBIs while Drew did out-homer him with 31, and 96 RBI's. I mean, the stats are all very comparable with Abreu edging Drew in more categories than vice-versa, but also considering Drew's contract and injury status, plus Abreu's increased publicity coming off of a very good 2005, as well as winning the HR Derby in record setting/breaking fashion that year, in addittion to the defense. WHile the defensive stats were also very coparable, Abreu had only 2 or 3 more errors than Drew throughout that period, but look at how many more games Abreu had played in. I forgot to look at assists, but I have a feeling the arm went to Abreu...i'll have to check on that.

IDK, basicaly what i'm trying to say is that all-things considered Bobby Abreu was probably the more favorable choice for everybody, including possibly the Red Sox I wouls say.
