BP hasn't adjusted ELO standings yet this morning. Here are yesterday's:
| AL East | W | L | Relative Strength | Proj Wins | Proj Losses | Champions (%) | Wild Card (%) | Playoffs (%) | | Red Sox | 26 | 19 | 1545 | 91 | 71 | 52 | 15 | 67 | | Rays | 25 | 18 | 1505 | 84 | 78 | 16 | 14 | 30 | | Orioles | 23 | 19 | 1488 | 79 | 83 | 7 | 7 | 14 | | Blue Jays | 22 | 23 | 1513 | 82 | 80 | 11 | 10 | 21 | | Yankees | 20 | 23 | 1524 | 83 | 79 | 14 | 12 | 26 |
Note that the Yankees are the second-best team in the AL East by BP's reckoning on the ELO method with a 1524 in the relative strength column. ELO considers the current winning or losing streak in conjunction with the pattern of past performance, including 2007 at an appropriately discounted rate. Unlike other systems, ELO essentially includes credit for the front office's history regarding late-season moves.
A six-game deficit is significant but not overwhelming. The Yankees are a championship-caliber team off to a bad start. They will still contend in the AL East, and they certainly might prevail.
It is far too early for either panic or hubris.

That pretty much eliminates about 98% of mj's posts.

Re: ...and whoever's playing the Yankees - 2008 Game Thread
haha.
I have seen it too many times. 3 yrs ago, I panicked after April. 2 yrs ago, I started panicking in May. Last yr, I panicked in June when we still sucked. Eventually, the panic will be warranted as you can only go 56-20 a handful of times before you just cannot do it anymore. Right now, the signs are there. The pen has been fantastic in spurts and then fails us in a game or two before going on a solid run again. Our top 3 have done more than we could ask for. Jeter, Abreu and Matsui are hitting well. With Melky now hitting the skids, we are relying on 3 hitters to carry 9 guys. You just cannot hit like that. With the weather warming up and Arod returning, things should straighten out a bit. Posada is due back in 2 weeks as well. Giambi is showing signs of life. Cano has his BA over .200, which was a feat from where it was. The O will go on a run and we'll start winning. If the O doesnt, we wont. Our pitching is serviceable for a good offensive team. Our pitching is not capable of turning 2 runs into a victory more times than not.

Re: ...and whoever's playing the Yankees - 2008 Game Thread
they and nobody for that matter in the al east is going to be able to run a 25-5 stretch due to the balance in the east
tampa and toronto are pitching very well and the sox beat you in a dozen different ways
baltimore is scrappy but they do suck.
if not for some heroics by mike mussina this team would be 10 out
why was giambi hitting against a lefty last nite?
oliver perez??
bwahahahahahaha

I'm not panicking yet, but just the way my tea i splaying is embarrassing to me. Hanging out with oneof my best friends last night who's a Met fan was horrible. I know this team's capabilities, they just need to play to their full potential.

Re: ...and whoever's playing the Yankees - 2008 Game Thread
id rather be on the little blue short bus with the 159th street yankee posse than sit with mets fans in any situation.
as much as i despise the yankees and am indifferent towards the mets i find the yankee fans 10000xs more genuine than the seinfeld types who like the mets.
you dont hear shit about met fans until the yankees are worse or the mets are in 1st place
in this building i work in i got 1 legit mets fan who has liked them since casey stengel was their coach and was a dodger fan till they moved to los angeles.
he knows who rusty staub and jon matlack are
he doesnt root for the yankees when the mets suck
he is legit
the others are prone to be obnoxious cocksuckers

Bases clearing double for Jones.
A Jeter error and what looked like a squeeze on Gameday will render Moose totally ineffective tonight.
5-0 O's

Moose is out in 1st innings. 7-0 O's.
Damon tried to imitate Ellsbury by diving for the ball and almost gave up an inside the park homer.
