2009 Yankee Draft Signing Thread - Page 2 - Talksox

I always think we should sign everyone, but apparently Hal has put a budget on this yrs draft. So, the yankees drafted a ton of college players who are DES and stock down juniors who have the leverage to go back to college. We have something like 10-12 player playing in the cape and we'll be watching them. We know their pricetag. Just depends on how they look and perform in terms of whether we meet it.

You'll be watching them. I won't. Not until they get to AAA will I even know who they are, to be honest.

This is where Cashman should be judged. If he can't draft and procure talent, then he should be gone. My second wish is that this draft fails like most of his others and he gets kicked out of the front office.

My first wish is that he drafts like the Red Sox did from 2003-2008. However, the chances of that are about the same as me dating Megan Fox and she stays faithful to me.

The first high school draftee for NY signed. Judd Golsan from the 31st round inked a deal. Specifics are not included, but Golsan was considered a top 10 round talent. He's a wiry, 6'1 center fielder with a plus arm and great speed and an advanced bat. He is expected to develop power. He dropped due to his commitment to the Tide and his bonus demands.

No other news at this time. But it looks like the yankees took a lot of college signability cases with a lot of players asking for over slot money. That means that Ny could have a flurry of deals announced right at the deadline since Selig typically delays signings that are over slot in the first 10 rounds

Brett Gerritse became our first HS pitcher to sign. He was taken in the 12th round. He's a 6'4 225lb righty who tops out at 92 and has a plus curveball now. The yankees are hoping he can add some velocity due to his big frame and work on his minus changeup to get it to big league average or better. Though his velocity isnt overpowering, grabbing a kid with a big league curveball and the frame to increase velocity was enough to spend overslot on him. No word on his signing bonus, but he had a strong college commit and was considered a pretty difficult signability case

Sean Black, the yankees 7th round pick and reclamation project, has signed. He's a tall RHP from Seton Hall who had been considered a first or second round talent out of high school, but decided to forgo the pros for college. There, he did not perform as well as his talent would indicate, and his stock dropped. The Yankees are hoping he can regain the command that eluded him. He features a mid 90s fastball and a plus potential breaking ball. He could be a quick convert to the pen if he shows difficulty out of the rotation

The yankees gave the Yankee Treatment to Chad Thompson, the yankees 18th rounder. He's the 6'8" high schooler who topped out at 97mph before tearing his UCL and needing TJ right around draft time. He had said he wanted to rehab as a pro and could be back by this time next yr. They typically give the yankee treatment to guys they anticipate signing. Slade Heathcott and JR Murphy already got the treatment.

What exactly is the "Yankee Treatment"? I'm curious whether this actually exists or whether it's some subjective entity that you invented to create false insight into whether or not they'll sign their draft picks.

I'm pretty sure you know what he means by "Yankee treatment" except it's not "Yankee", since every team does it.

Yeah, that was the other thing. How is the "Yankee Treatment" any different than the "Red Sox Treatment"? Is it twice as powerful or something? I found it entertaining that he basically said in normal speak "the Yankees are acting like they want to sign this guy, so I think they will sign this guy. They acted like they wanted to sign these other two guys, and they did."

I agree that Jacko gets into his business here. I think it has been really nice having you around. You've added a good perspective to this board and are fitting in very nicely. You jab Jacko and Gom appropriately and definitely know your stuff about baseball.

That said, I can't help but find some humor in you calling Jacko out for getting "into it" when you have averaged an astounding 97 posts per day somehow. I mean, jesus!

I think you get into it pretty well too Dutchy!

The Yankee treatment is when they give the kid a Yankee uniform and bring him to a yankee game. The player spends the day with the entire club, hangs out in the clubhouse, gets paired with a player akin to their position and essentially gets to see what a day as a yankee is like. Hitters get to take BP, while pitchers get to warm up on the practice mound and do the usual running. The yankees do this every yr with their top picks aside from last yr as Cole did not want to go to Yankee Stadium. They have been doing it increasingly for signability cases hoping that the amenities and the mystique will coerce the player into signing. For the most part, every player that I know of over the past 3 yrs that they did this for has signed.
