Re: Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Thread
A healthy Pronk in Yankee Stadium would be ridiculous. Alas, a healthy Pronk became extinct after 2007

I like this deal for the Yankees. He's a good asset against right-handed pitching.

Any kind of LHH power threat instantly has value for the Yanks a YS imo. Would be a solid sign.

I'm reading everywhere Yanks are trying to void Arods deal. Thoughts in general from our Yankee mates here on the board?

Hell Yes. I don't think they'll void it, but it seems like if he sits out this year and they can pay a doctor off they can buy him out for 15% and insurance will pick up the rest of his deal. Which would be like Christmas morning for the Yankees.

Why is it possible they can void his deal if he misses the whole season? Players with bad deals (John Lackey for example) miss seasons fairly often and voiding their contracts never comes up.

Not void. collect the insurance as a career ending injury. He sits out a year and then comes back in 2014 with a different team, but idk we'll see.

I just don't understand the whole situation. Teams have had bad players on bad contracts for a long time, and no one else had out clauses. All the reports I've heard state that insurance companies won't touch players past the 4th year of the deal, and most of them only go up to 50% coverage, but somehow the Yankees get 85% for all years? There is a good deal of false information going out about this situation.

The Yankees are probably paying a pretty high premium to get that kind of coverage.

How many years were the O's paying Albert Belle after his career ended? Why should the Yanks be treated differently?

Well I'm sure the price for that insurance was pretty high. I remember the Yankees only ended up paying Pavano $11.35 million of his $39.95 million deal. Granted that was only a four year deal and 40 million, not 270 million.

Belle's money was mostly paid by insurance. The Yankees are hoping ARod goes down the Belle path way

a good deal of false information going out about
definitely the understatement of the yr
FWIW B4 this week I was under the impression
with these long contracts you could only insure a guy 3 or 4 years at a time
like U said it still doesn't explain the ''85% for all years''
especally considering he already had hip issues
but I'm guessing if one is willing to pay enough
one can get coverage for most anying
interesting to find out (read only once) durring the napoli saga
sox don't insure their players

Pretty sure the insurance company will be asking for their money back if he comes back from a "career ending" injury.

Re: Yankees 2012-2013 Offseason Thread
The Yankees dealt Abraham Almonte to the Mariners for Shawn Kelley. Kelley is a RH reliever who has been pretty solid for the M's in their MiLB system and has put up solid numbers thus far in parts of 4 seasons in the bigs. Low 90s heat with a good slider, he projects to earn a spot in middle relief
