Phillips will play first everyday...in Columbus!
...or maybe he wont, Carlos Pena is doing pretty good down there. Maybe Phillips plays second everyday down there, or maybe third over Cosme now that Russ Johnson is down for the year.
Only way that Phillips stays here is if the Yankees DFA Nick Green and use Phillips as the backup utility infielder until Cano comes back. People forget that Phillips' natural position is second and he was moved to first in Columbus only because they didnt have a first baseman back in 2004. Only problem though is that if Cano comes back before September 1st, which will probably be the case, then Phillips will have to be sent down until the first when rosters expand, making him ineligable for the postseason.

No, it's Bubba who's out of options. Phillips made his debut in 2004, making this his third option year. Bubba also made his debut in 2004, but was on the 40 man roster in both LA and here with the YAnkees in 2003.

I feel ya, but it's a tough debate. Do you DFA Bubba or Guiel? I DFA Guielonly because Bubba is the fastest guy on our bench and with Phillips likely going down, we have nobody else who can run as a pinch runner off of the bench.

EH, Guiel has been slugging 500 with us. I would keep him. If Damon needs a day off then (I cant believe I'm going to say this) let Bernie play CF for the day.

Thanks for posting that as I meant to ask a few days ago what the deal was. As I recall it's three years on a 40 man roster until you lose options, but this year we have guys like GUiel and Jason Johnson getting optioned down. Can anybody explain to me how this is happening?

That's a good diea, and I definately cant disagree with your opinion, but what about when we are down by a run in the bottom of the 8th inning with Giambi on second? Who do you put in to run? Not Bernie.

I'm assuming this was a general question because Jason Johnson was included in your post. Jason Johnson sucks, and Guiel has no place on a stacked team. Especially when the two teams that these players are on are the Red Sox and Yankees.

Re: Yankees get Craig Wilson
Johnson was placed on waivers and no one bit.
Same with Guiel. (Probably)

Good point, if Cano comes back in the next couple of days you could go Cairo I guess. That might be a week away tho.

Yeah, but the official transactions said they were optioned. Being placed on waivers and being optioned are two different things. There have been a few instances of this so far this season that I meant to bring up, but havent gotten around to it. I know both GUiel and Johnson are well out of options, so how does this happen? (There are other instances, I can go into it more with more examples when I get more time)

I never understood how that worked out either. Johnson was out of options as far as I could tell, but still he was able to be sent down to Pawtucket without clearing waivers.

Re: Yankees get Craig Wilson
I thought I understood how it worked, and never had any problem understanding any transactions until this year when I heard Jason Johnson was optioned to Pawtucket, and when the Yankee claimed Guiel; reading in the press release that he still had options. I'm lost.
