But who would you have brought in there instead of Fransworth? Isn't that why he gets paid 5.6m? So he can come in in the 8th in close games and not blow it? Who else are you paying to do that job?

Re: April 11th Yankees @ Twins
When you have a pitcher like Farnsworth in a close game you need to open your eyes and be ready to pull him at a moments notice. When he is on, or even okay, he is untouchable. But when he is bad, he is so horrible that he ends games (negatively). Torre has Myers in the pen yet keeps him there when Mauer is hitting with an open base and the winning run on 2nd. Then he just lets Farns have it and make the game a no doubter. Man, Joe is a pretty dumb guy, but this was a pisspoor job of managing the pen after having one hell of pitching duel.

Re: April 11th Yankees @ Twins
Here is what I would have done. There are games when Farnsworth really has it, and then there are games when he doesn't have it at all. He walked Castillo on four pitches (you know something is wrong when you walk Castillo considering all he can do is hit singles). I agree with letting him face Punto, considering Punto isn't too great a hitter and no one would be warmed at that point. But you have to recognized when Farnsworth doesn't have it and that should be apparent after what he did with the first batter. So now there is a runner on second and one out. Mike Myers is on this team for a reason, because he is supposed to be able to get out lefties just about every time. If he can't do this he is taking up a roster spot. I bring in Myers to face Mauer, if he gets him out, I walk Cuddyer intentionally. Then I let Myers face Morneau. Obviously this is a difficult task for Myers, asking him to get out two of the best left handed hitters in the game back to back. But the way I see, if he is not getting out lefties nearly every time, he is taking someones spot on the roster who could give the Yankees more innings. I also say this because Joe has to recognize when Farnsworth doesn't have it and that should have been apparent right away.

Once he K'd Punto, I'd have put Myers in the game for Mauer, I would have walked Cuddyer and then pitched to Morneau. After Morneau, I'd have gone to Bruney.

I guess we completely agree. I didn't see your post before I posted my thoughts.

Mattingly may have to wake him so he can take notice.

innings, innings, innings. I imagine Torre has his rationale for his decision here.
I'm definitely of the school that hindsight is 20/20 and as fans we're prone to questioning poor decisions. Not that you guys don't know what you're talking about, you're right about your use of Myers in this situation, but there certainly would be times that we would be questioning your choices too. (or applauding them because it helps the Yankees lose! )

That's why the Yankees won when Zimmer was the bench coach, not because he was telling Joe some great strategies or anything, but because he could tell when Joe was falling asleep and would wake him up.

Re: April 11th Yankees @ Twins
Ugh, if only Abreu's shot had not been right at Castillo.
EDIT: Giambi continues his slow start.
