Hughes is for real
I was thinking he might be overrated , especially after his first start in which he didn't look very good. But tonight was just amazing. He was simply never tested, nobody really hit anything that hard and I believe he at least one strike out an inning. His fastball and curve were extremely good.
As for the injury, it doesn't really bother me that much since he was going to be sent down anyway as soon as someone comes back. It sucks for now cuz we have no starting pitching but I think it's good that he gets some time off on a positive note. I will be looking forward to watching this guy pitch a few months from now.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yankee fans love small sample sizes.

Re: Hughes is for real
Say small sample size all you want, I know what I saw. A well located fastball, a very good changeup and an excellent curve. That's there now and it will be there 20 starts from now.

I'm sure there are truckloads of pitchers who could locate pitches for a start.
I agree he'll be very good, but i think he's a smidge overrated.

Re: Hughes is for real
He's couple of years away from making an impact, but it would have been interesting to watch him develop. Now, he has had a setback like most young pitchers.

Re: Hughes is for real
He is VASTLY overrated. He is pretty much here to stay, Pavano is no longer an option for the Yankees. He tweaked his calf or hamstring, no big deal.
All in all, a phenomenal pitching performance...but it is just one game. I hope he turns out to be something great, but I will reserve judgement until I see how he handles a late season start with first place on the line against the Red Sox.
On another note, I had to turn off the radio going home tonight. The sports talk shows have all but given the rookie of the year and cy young awards already locked up for Phil Hughes. Nothing like buying into the hype. It's almost as bad as being in Boston.

That's true...but let them have their fun. Hughes pitched great...if someone came up from AAA ball for us and dominated like this, we'd all be going crazy as well.

Re: Hughes is for real
Whoa lets hold off on giving the Cy Young & Rookie of the Year to Hughes. Like Kilio said he'll be out for a month or moth and a half. Cy Young will probably go to Johan Santanna. No starting pitcher in the AL is above him in my book.
Now youre going to call me a Sox homer, maybe indeed I am, but the leading candidate for ROY is Matsuzaka. He'll have his bumps of course going through the AL but still is estmiated to finish with 15-18 wins, 3.75-4.15 ERA, 200+ innings isnt out of the question, 225 +/- Ks. Right now his only competitor for that is the D-Rays Delmon Young
EDIT: If anyone needs to be fired or questioned, its the Yankees training/medical staff. Yet another hamstring injury, I heard on the radio that they had stopped the pitchers doing sprints in preparation for their games

Re: Hughes is for real
He was buzzsaw against that offense. It wasnt just the no-hit bid. He didnt allow a ball out of the infield for nearly 5 innings.
