Default Hughes sprains ankle

http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/

Quote:
Phil Hughes had his inevitable setback when he turned an ankle doing agility drills and will have an MRI. Hamstring issues always lead to problems of some sort. Torre said he didn’t think the ankle problem was serious but it will delay the process.

more from Rotoworld:
Quote:
Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday that Phil Hughes, out since May 1 with a hamstring injury, has a Grade 3 ankle sprain and will need 4-6 weeks of rehab time before he gets back on the mound.

This after the Yankees said last week that an MRI came back negative and he'd only be backed up a few days. No one should have counting on seeing Hughes back in pinstripes before the All-Star break anyway.

looks like an August return, and most likely that will mean a Sept callup. He was being counted on.

Although the Yankees are hoping Phil Hughes will return by August, some in the organization are privately worried he might miss the rest of the season.

Hughes rolled his left ankle while performing conditioning exercises last week in Tampa, where he was rehabilitating a left hamstring he strained while pitching against Texas last month. He went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two Yankee starts this season, fanning 11 and walking four in 10 2/3 innings.

For a power pitcher like Hughes, tearing a hammy and spraining your ankle this badly can't be good.

That would be true phor most power pitchers, but the Phranchise is special. His magic arm will phind a way to account phor what the base cannot provide, and in the end, he'll be all that much more ephphective.

didnt tear the hammy. But did tear the ankle. A grade 3 sprain includes ligamental tear.

Almost sounds like Nomar's Achilles tendon thing.

not really. The achilles tendon is much more resilient than the ankle ligaments. And there are many ankle ligaments that stabilize the ankle. Most ankle sprains still allow enough stability afterwards to not need surgery to repair the ligamentous injury.

In terms of Hughes, his injury and timetable has more to do with his age and status with the organization than with how injured he actually is. If this was an older player, they'd be rehabbing right now and likely would see action in a couple weeks. Hughes, OTOH, is being held up because of his status as the future of the yankees staff and will likely be held back until he is 100%.

So wait, how does not throwing innings this year NOT kill Hughes' development?

he'll be pitching. He'll be throwing in rehab assignments and will likely be in AAA for the last 2-3 months. I think you are overblowing the situation. He wont be in the majors, but he will be pitching.

And you're expecting him to throw 200 innings next year why?
