the "rocket" a clever nickname
name given when he launched his ass out of boston because he wanted to play closer to home
he flunked geography and he flunked at any attempt for me to give him any respect after that move

Are you serious? You can say that Pedro had the best YEARS as a member of the Sox, but to say he's the best PITCHER to ever put on a Sox uniform is so far from true it's ridiculous. Clemens is, quite possibly, the best pitcher EVER. Look at his stats. Look at the numbers.
Oh...and I think that Cy Young once played for the Sox as well. I won't argue for Cy, in that the game was entirely different then so you can't compare stats from then to stats from the recent era...but it warrants mentioning anyways.

Re: O/U on Inning for Clemens...
It depends on how you define the best pitcher. Pedro, when he was healthy, was better than them all, ever. Clemens had a better career because you don't have to qualify it with the "healthy" tag. He stayed healthy, so he was good for longer. But he was never close to as good as Pedro was at his peak.

Yes, let's look at numbers. Look at the career list for the following categories: Winning %, WHIP, Hits/9 innings, K's/9 innings, and Adjusted ERA. Tell me where Clemens or even Cy Young are in those categories. Pedro is in the top 3 of all those categories, except where he has just barely slipped to # 4 behind Ryan in Hits/9innings. Also, tell me if there are any other statistical categories that are better indicators of a pitcher's worth. He's not only the best pitcher to wear a Red Sox uniform, but the best of all time. I saw the Rocket from his rookie year and I watched all the big pitchers from the 60's. None of them can claim to better than Pedro.
Edit: These numbers go beyond his prime. His prime was other-worldy, and frankly, his career numbers are close to other-worldy.

If you want to give it to Clemens, I guess you could do it based on longevity. However, in the time he was in Boston, Pedro Martinez was easily the best pitcher.
As for Cy Young, you do know the stat of ERA+ compares ballparks and the eras the game was played in, correct?
| Pitcher | Career ERA+ | | P. Martinez | 160 | | R. Clemens | 143 | | C. Young | 138 |

Re: O/U on Inning for Clemens...
I think 1999 Pedro was the most dominant pitching performance I will ever see. They should show more old school pedro dominance on NESN.

The 1999 All-Star Game still gives me goosebumps. Pedro was just flat out ridiculous.

Clemens...more wins, more ks, more cy youngs, one more WS ring, an MVP, more All-Stars.
I'm not claiming that matching them up in their prime wouldn't put Pedro ahead of Clemens...it would. All I'm saying is that Clemens is, notably, a BETTER pitcher. Clemens has been better for longer. Pedro's body is already broken down and he's 9 years Clemens' junior. Is there not something to be said for longevity?

I'm not limiting the comparison to their primes. Pedro has had a long career, over 3,000 k's and 200 + wins. All of his key indicator ratios and measures are better than Clemens over their careers, not just their primes. The only #'s where Clemens is better are cumulative stats from pitching into his 40's. If you stopped Clemens career 9 years ago, all his numbers would lag Pedro.

Ask Trevor Hoffman.
Look, if you can't see the fact that Pedro's time here was better than Clemens's, I don't know what I can tell you.

Re: O/U on Inning for Clemens...
I'm just glad that when he walked off the mound for the last time in a Yankee uniform that he walked off having failed his team.
