Hey all- I did some searches on mlb.tv but couldn't find what I was looking for-

I have AT&T UVerse and live in Austin, TX now so I don't have NESN. Is MLB.TV my best option? Will I get blacked out a lot? How does it look when you stream it into a HDTV? Is the process difficult?

Thanks

Hello everyone! I'm from Andover Massachusetts and I love the RedSox! A little bit about my history; I played little league for the Andover Athletics and my team won two championships :D It was all thanks to Ryan Yag and his little brother Dan, I kind of sucked :( but a trophy is a trophy at the end of the day. Their father Bob coached the team, and he would always try to continue the season into summer vacation with a little thing we called Summer League. Oh brother, how much fun we had just playing ball all summer, I remember when Yani Wallingford would only show up for the last game because Bob would treat everyone to pizza HAHA! Anyway, I hope we all get along here and we can talk some good baseball! Can't wait for the season, GO SOX!

the first 5 spots in the bullpen are pretty set. Paps is the closer, followed by Bard, Oki, RR, and MDC in any order you prefer. I'd say on the whole, that group's gonna be solid no matter what happens with the other two spots, which are probably going to be mostly inning eaters rather than guys who you'd send out there to dominate in a close game. Delcarmen was rough second half of last year, but that was possibly something you could just blame on injury and let go, and I don't think Oki's age is going to start showing just yet. We might have the best bullpen in the division, but even if we don't ours should be an asset rather than a liability.

How do you guys think the team's going to address the last two bullpen spots? We gonna let Bowden and Tazawa compete for them, do you see more signings, or are we going to sort it out among Bonser, the other RR, and a few members of the scrub brigade get a look?

Also, any dark horses you think have a chance to impress us?

Super Bowl Total Points Scored

Ok, time for a little more Super Bowl fun. This is really easy simply pick what you think will be the total points scored *by the end of the game* and who will win. For example, if the final score was 31-28 with Indy winning, the correct answer would be Indy and 59 pts.
You must have at least 50 posts, and only one guess per member. In the event of a tie, the earliest guess wins. I'll try to keep the guesses posted and current to prevent this. *Entries close 12:00 Noon EST on 2/7/10*.

The Yankees According to Bill James

I didn't pick up the latest issue of the Bill James Handbook, but I did recently find a blog post covering interesting stats that relate to the Yankees. These stats always make for some good discussion.

---Quote---
    * Over the last three season, Jorge Posada is the worst catcher at “saving runs” with a mark of -23. (During this time, Yadier Molina was the leader with a mark of +22).
    * In terms of “net gain” in baserunning, factoring in chances to go first to third, second to home, etc., and the amount of times the player was successful, as well as making outs on the bases, hitting into double plays, and net steals, the Yankees were the 22nd worst team in baseball with a mark of -9. (The best team in baseball here was the Phillies with a mark of +109 and the worst team in baseball was the Royals with a mark of -67.)
    * Also in terms of “net gain” in baserunning, Robinson Cano was the worst in baseball for second baseman (-23) and Chase Utley was the best (+50). This probably lends towards explaining the Phillies and Yankees overall team totals in this stat.
    * David Robertson allowed .36 of his inherited baserunners to score in 2009. For a point of comparison, Edwar Ramirez last season posted a mark of .33 here, Brian Burney’s number was .31, Damaso Marte posted a .19 and Phil Hughes’ fashioned a percentage of .06 – yes, point-oh-six.
    * In 2008, Joe Girardi had runners moving with the pitch 173 times (which was tops in the league). But, in 2009, Girardi had runners moving just 83 times. (What a difference not having Jason Giambi makes, I suppose.)
    * Nick Swisher had the second worst “BPS per OutZ” in the American League with a mark of .218 in 2009. What’s “BPS per OutZ”? It’s batting average plus slugging percentage on pitches outside of the strikezone. (Hey, Swishalicious, do yourself a favor and only swing at strikes!)
    * A.J. Burnett had the third “fastest” average fastball in the league at 94.2 MPH last season whereas Andy Pettitte had the third “slowest” average fastball in the league at 89.0 MPH (minimum 162 IP in both cases).
    * Among all players with at least 98 games played at 2B or SS, Robinson Cano had the 10th worst “2B Pivot %” in the league at .563 and Derek Jeter had the 10th worst “SS Pivot %” at .541 (whereas Dustin Pedroia led 2B at .789 and Yuniesky Betancourt was tops at SS with .735).

Orlando Hudson signs with the Twins.

---Quote---
The Minnesota Twins and second baseman Orlando Hudson have agreed on a one-year, $5 million contract.

The Twins announced the deal late Thursday night.

As part of the deal, the Twins agreed not to offer Hudson salary arbitration if he is a Type A free agent next offseason. Thus, a team will be able to sign Hudson without losing a draft pick, making him more attractive on the open market.

The contract does not include incentives.

Hudson gives the Twins a veteran at the top of the batting order with a .282 career average and four Gold Glove awards. He played in his second All-Star Game last season, his only year with the Los Angeles Dodgers after four with the Toronto Blue Jays and three with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He'll form an all-new double-play tandem for the Twins with shortstop J.J. Hardy, who came in an earlier offseason trade from the Milwaukee Brewers. The 32-year-old Hudson batted .283 with 35 doubles, six triples, nine homers and 62 RBIs in 551 at-bats for the Dodgers last year.
---End Quote---
Nice signing for the Twins.

Am I the only one a bit nervous about John Lackey?

I see a lot of excitement over the Lackey signing, and while I'm glad the Red Sox made the investment, and think it was a good decision when they made it, I can't really join in the celebration over that signing with unbridled enthusiasm.

It seems to me that we're taking a fair-sized risk on a pitcher whose career peak was 3 years ago now, who pitched mostly in a pitcher's haven of a division (although I think the Angels' park is one of the more neutral parks in the pitcher-friendly West, the fact remains that even with neutral packs, AL Western offense has been extremely weak over the last few seasons) and who's struggled on and off with injuries each of the preceding two seasons.

I'm not the kind to panic-monger, my major malfunction tends to run in the other direction after all, but am I really the only one who's looking at some of those underlying facts and sort of more hoping that this guy doesn't unravel on is than actually believing he'll be effective over the lifetime of his deal? The bust potential on this guy is not exactly minimal after all, he's been used hard and he's used to a much bigger margin of error than he'll get in Boston.

I'm sure I'll be ripped apart for posting this, at least a little bit, especially because I'm providing near-perfect Jacko fodder but as you guys whet your knives just take a second to think about it and tell me you're not at least a little on guard over this issue yourself.

If you weren't selected, don't take it as a snub. Each of the 25 participants will have 4 picks. I believe that all the participants have played before, so I'll skip the rules. If, however, anyone has a question, just ask.

Tigers lock up Verlander.

---Quote---
The Tigers and Justin Verlander have agreed to a five-year deal worth $80MM according to the AP (via NBCSports.com), and it could be made official as soon as tomorrow. The righthander filed for $9.5MM in arbitration, and the team countered with $6.9MM.

Verlander, 27 later this month, had reportedly been seeking a sixth guaranteed year, however it appears the team was able to talk him out of it with more guaranteed money. The former second overall pick led the American League in starts, innings, batters faced, strikeouts, and wins in 2009, earning him a third place finish in the Cy Young voting. He also has a no-hitter, a Rookie of the Year Award, and World Series experience to his credit.

The deal buys out the Verlander's two remaining arbitration years plus three free agent years for an average annual salary of $16MM, and will take him to age 32. It's worth slightly more than Felix Hernandez's five-year, $78MM deal, which was being used as a comparison. Tim compared the two pitchers just yesterday.

I used to be heavy into sports betting, I won a bunch, then blew my wad. One of my roommates successfully got me back into it.

Tonight I'll be parlaying the Celtics/Heat o/u 182.5 with the Heat getting 5.5.

I'll be taking the Saints on the money line this weekend, but I'm waiting a couple more days to see if it moves up.

Anyone else just enjoy the hell out of making meaningless games more interesting?

G'day from Melbourne Australia!

My name is Amelia, and I am leading the Red Sox nation in Melbourne ;-)

I grew up in Pepperell MA - my dad is from New Hampshire...so we have been a huge Red Sox family for as long as I can remember.

I heard the Sox were playing an exhibition match in Sydney this year? But sounds like it's been a lie :(

Last year I went back to Boston for a vacation - and went to Fenway. It was off-season but still took a tour! Best day of my life, so far!
