Not one, but two very good pitching options off the market from Cherrington. All for the cost of a homophobic and mediocre starting shortstop and Toronto's #8 prospect.

Hello last place.

Jays gave up very little. They must taken on 90% of the salaries.

Just a crazy trade... Jays gave up some talent but I'd expected the Marlins to aquire at least D'Arnaud. Jays still have a pretty nice farm system intact too.

If this trade happens then the Sox fall a little further behind a division rival. The Jays will be adding two quality arms to their rotation and an all-star SS. It just made the Sox job back to respectibility a lot harder. If all three are healthy the Jays just improved their team a lot.

It is crazy how much the Marlins have cut from their payroll since last year

Johnson -- 14 million
Hanley -- 15 million
Reyes -- 10 million -> 16 million -> 22 million.
Buerhle -- 12 million -> 19 million -> 20 million.
Bell -- 10million
Buck -- 6 million
Infante 4 million
Bonifacio 3+ million (arbitration?)

Not to mention Anibel Sanchez who cost 8 million last year. Crazy crazy money.

This is sure gonna make it that much tougher for the Sox to sell the 'patient approach'...

Even crazier, it seems like this trade mirrors the Dodgers/Red Sox trade from last August.

Buyer ---- Seller
--> Solid, but non spectacular prospects (De la Rosa & Webster/ Marisnick + Hechavarria + Nicolini)
<-- Player hated by press (Beckett/Escobar)
<-- Big money player, often injured, possible bust (Crawford/Reyes)
<-- The high value centerpiece (Gonzalez/Johnson+Buerhle)
<-- The slightly expensive not-so-valuable player (Punto/Buck)
--> Mediocre starting players meant to fill out the roster (Sands + Loney/Arencibia + Mathis)

I don't know what the patient approach means. Does that mean that we just build through the draft? The Red Sox have to get back to competitiveness and respectability. We don't have to be the odds on favorites in Vegas, but they need to get back to respectability fast. The Jays just put some huge room between us. Cherington is just too slow on the trigger. I can't imagine how he didn't get in on some of those players.

Cherington and the FO may have the mindset right now that they just unloaded a bunch of big contracts that were handcuffing them, do we really want to jump right into a new bunch of them? The Jays just took on 150+ million of contracts.
