Re: Felix Hernandez signs contract extension with Mariners
Wow. All indications pointed to him not wanting the extension. Its a shame that such a great pitcher is going to be on a last place team his entire career.

Re: Felix Hernandez signs contract extension with Mariners
And the pipedream of getting King Felix officially goes up in smoke. The mariners did the smart thing. Stud aces are rare. You don't let them go. We will be waiting for a long time before one hits the FA and we outbid the Yank, Dodgers, Angels and others. We need to build a deep rotation of non-aces until one comes up through our system. Don't hold your breath.

The next wave will hit after 2014 when Verlander hits FA. At that point, the financial shackles will be removed from the Yankees. I have a feeling we see him in pinstripes unless the Tigers go bonkers to keep him

He'll be a Tiger for life. The most likely scenario is that they'll give him a record breaking contract.... and it'll be a team-friendly deal.

Yeah, I think that Verlander will be signing an extension; what've the Tigers got to lose?

Verlander would be entering his yr 32 season when the first yr of any new deal would start, so this would presumably be his final contract. He also signed a pretty team friendly deal previously, I guarantee that if he were to sign an extension, the Tigers would need to approach him now and be willing to tear up the current contract and surpass Felix. The other interesting pitcher available at that time will be Clayton Kershaw, who I think will definitely reach FA

Re: Felix Hernandez signs contract extension with Mariners
Kershaw becomes a FA when Beckett contract ends. He might be looking at 200M and will be just 26.

I just don't understand your logic. If the Dodgers are willing to overspend on rejects, how much do you think they'd throw out for actual talent? They're not as poorly run as you seem to believe.

Felix must really like the city. Or not care about winning a World Series, or both.

Kershaw is another pipe dream for some Red Sox fans. The Dodgers will not let him sniff the open market.

I think the amount of money he received had something to do with it as well..

Wow that's a big deal. Good for Seattle though.

Kershaw seems intent on hitting the open market. If he does, do you really think the Yankees will be outbid should they really want him? I know the Dodgers have money, but they also have $150 mil tied up in another pitcher

Reports came out after the Felix deal that Kershaw and the Dodgers have mutual interest in a new contract.
Look at the money the Dodgers are spending on their current rotation! Do you honestly think they'd bat an eyelash to drop Beckett + Lily after 2014 in order to pay one of the best pitchers in baseball?
Greinke $23m
Beckett $16m
Billingsley $11m
Ted Lilly $13m
Hyun-Jin Ryu $6m
Harang $7m
