Pedro Martinez Considering Retirement
Quote:
New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez is considering retirement after this season, according to the New York Daily News.
The veteran right-hander cited concerns over his 78-year-old father's failing health. Pablo Martinez is currently suffering from a form of brain cancer.
"It's taking a toll on me and my family, my dad's situation," Martinez told the Daily News. "I haven't been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year, I haven't been there for my family, my parents.
"That'll probably drag me away from the game a little sooner than people expect."
The 36-year-old Martinez, who is currently rehabbing an injured left hamstring at the Mets' minor league facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, plans to make a final decision after the season.
"After this season, I'm going to go back home and think about it and I'm going to decide," Martinez added.
A three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star, Martinez is in the final season of a four-year deal he signed with the Mets after helping the Boston Red Sox capture a World Series championship in 2004.
Martinez, who has a sterling 209-93 career record with a 2.81 earned run average in parts of 17 big league seasons, is expected back shortly by the Mets.

I doubt he thought the Mets would be in 4th place and that the Marlins would be at the top. But that's baseball.

Re: Pedro Martinez Considering Retirement
Well I guess those were just rumors:
FROM ESPN - Pedro Martinez, who returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his sick father, said Wednesday that he plans to stick around for at least two more seasons.
"I feel great physically and for the record I haven't considered retirement. Retirement would only take place if my arm is badly hurt and if I have to face surgery or something near that nature," Martinez told ESPNdeportes.com while visiting his father, Pablo Jaime, who has a form of brain cancer.

Re: Pedro Martinez Considering Retirement
You know, we'll never see a 1999 Pedro Martinez, EVER again. I consider him to be the most dominant pitcher of our time, and probably the cleanest. I even watched him when he was with the Expos.
I think if it wasn't for his injuries, he probably coudl reach atleast 250 wins. But with his recent issues I don't see that happening. Regardless, the man is going to the Hall of Fame.
Truth to be told, I'd rather see him retire now, ahead of the game, instead of doing what Roger Clemens has down with his several retirements and reappearances.
Then again you never know, he may comeback strong and have a decent season.

Re: Pedro Martinez Considering Retirement
we lost a ton of swagger when petey went to flushing and it took josh beckett a couple of years to get it back
the best pitcher i have ever seen in my life albeit over a limited time frame
imagine if duke gave him a legit #2 rather than the john burketts and david cones washed up asses?
the man was never the same after the 99 allstar game but he carried an auro of invincibility and confidence each time he walked out there
i compare him to marvin hagler, another of the few men i cherished watching over the years and 1 of a few i called a hero of mine along with ali

Re: Pedro Martinez Considering Retirement
Pedro's got a 1 hitter going into the 4th against the Pirates. Mets up 4-0, Pirates have 3 E's.
