Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
I found humor there. He supports teaching sex ed to 5 year-olds because half of 15-19 year olds are sexually active and he thinks the root cause is ignorance. I guess, according to him, it takes 10 years for awareness about the consequences of sexually activity to sink in.
Teaching a 5 y/o about sex is preposterous. My school taught sex ed when I was in 5th grade. I was 10. That was sufficient timing to educate me about human sex before my body was physically able to reproduce.

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
rather than sex ed we had a class called ""value development"" or VD for short.
the class was taught by Father Blaise Giambelli in a public high school by the way.
3 years after I graduated Father Blaise left St Mary's Church and the Worcester Arch Diocese because he fell in love with a woman and was sexually active with her.
I know sex ed works better than teaching abstinence but at the age of 5 is it effective or worth while?
i doubt it.

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
Congratulations to Barak Obama for locking up the democratic nomination.
He ran a good campaign and came out of nowhere to beat the bitch like a rented mule against all odds and a hard core machine that considered the nomination a mere nuisance.
nice effort
lets see what happens to him between now and november.

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
Just so nobody starts to miss e1, I'll take a shot at his reply to this issue.
What's so bad about teaching 5 year-olds about sex? And besides, we really don't know the context of what he said. I'm sure it was probably something along the lines of "Would you rather teach a 5 y/o about sex in school or have sex with one?" Well, of course the answer is to teach there, so Obama is a hero. And a lot of people like him, I mean, he sold out his campaign speech in Bumfuck, NE, so you should vote for him.
It's much better than being a gun-toting, bible-quoting, Budweiser-guzzling, racist, NASCAR fan who would have had sex with the 5 y/o. Peace out, bitches.
Just like old times.

Wait, I came up with a few on my way out to save you the time and trouble:
"example1 is crying like a typical liberal wussie who wants to save the world" or "example1 is showing the typical spinelessness of half of Americans, when the going gets tough he runs" or "this board is a 'typical' sports fans paradise where discussion from all sides is replaced by dumbed down waive-the-flag NASCAR style discussion and "gotcha" moments instead of legitimate discussion."
I can see why all the sensable people left here or don't post on talksox as much as they used to. The bullying and degredation that some of you level out under the cloak of "a good joke" is too much on issues that millions hold to be some of the most important in history.
You and your Reaganomics friends can keep giving each other high fives while the facts move their discussion elsewhere.
Have a nice season everyone... perhaps I'll check in occasionally.

I respectfully disagree.
Example1 is a good man. I fault him for his political perspectives, and I've explained to him in excruciating detail why I believe that his perspectives are wrong. Although his perspectives fall short of my expectations, his ethics do not.
Example1 is not a douche, IMO, just as you are not, CrespoBlows. I may be wrong, but I'd rather that my position were respected on both counts.

Isn't it unethical to be dogmatic?
I don't like example1, because if you don't agree with him, you're not only wrong, but an "uninformed flag waving NASCAR lover."
But, as you say, YMMV.

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
Here are two video cuts of the Democrat nominee for President. The Press has been portraying him as articulate and brilliant, but take him away from a TelePrompter or prepared text and he is quite unimpressive. If Bush or Quayle or any Republican had stumbled like this, it would have led the nightly news. Was this the top story in the news today?

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
Google hits:
Start with the guy who can't spell potato:
"Quayle stumbled:" 105
OK, now some guys who actually stumble:
"Dole stumbled:" 126
"Kennedy stumbled:" 560
"Ford stumbled:" 674
And now, some recently famous names:
"Bush stumbled:" 3,350
"Clinton stumbled:" 3,790
"Obama stumbled:" 3,740
Hmmm...I guess that it's just recent fame and attempted ridicule driving the hits.
"McCain stumbled:" 1,440
Although some potential targets appear less likely to engender this variety of ridicule...

I respectfully disagree with what seems to be your point of view.
Obama IS brilliant, and he IS articulate. He flubbed his words in those two clips...no doubt about it. But to claim a guy isn't articulate and/or brilliant based upon two examples is kind of ridiculous, don't you think? These guys aren't robots...and this isn't a Rep/Dem kind of a thing, either; I think it's ridiculous when people pick apart anyone that loses a word when they're speaking off-the-cuff regardless of their party affiliation. Bush's flubs obviously get more press because he's actually IN office rather than running for it.
I've seen Obama speak in Town Hall format twice during this campaign and I can tell you that he was EXTREMELY impressive both times.
You can't doubt the "brilliance" of anyone elected into office. Well, you can, but it's ignorant. You can disagree with a lot of the policies and their judgment calls and what not, but to claim their unintelligent is foolish. (That's not in reference to you...it's in reference to anyone who carries the 'oh, Bush is dumb!' card without thinking.)

HoSN, I concur that anybody who makes it so far as to be the apparent nominee for President of a major US political party is more intelligent than average.*
That said, a caution: note that Senator Clinton was struggling to get Obama into unmoderated debates late in the campaign. She waited too long--Obama declined--but she was aiming at his Achilles Heel--he does have challenges in open debate format. Hillary knew that she could kick his ass, as she had done in the ABC debate...Obama backed off.
Here's the deal, though: Senator McCain is probably the smartest, highest energy candidate this election**--don't be fooled by his age. He tried the same gambit, inviting Obama to "open Town Halls," and it appears that Obama may accept. If these open debates go down, I suspect that we'll find that Obama is less far above average in intellect than McCain, despite McCain's age.
* I do, however, wonder at times if President George W Bush somehow suffered mild brain damage, perhaps in that event where he passed out temporarily, during his first term. He was able to debate the very-intelligent Vice President Gore better in 2000 than he was able to debate the, um, effete Senator Kerry in 2004.
** Mayor Bloomberg and Representative Kucinich might compete successfully with McCain in this regard.

Most people don't think about it like you do. Most people don't realize that when you are speaking about issues and answering questions constantly that anyone would have his/her share of flubs. They only know what the press feeds them. If all they see are clips of Bush mispeaking, they wrongfully conclude that he is dumb. My question is where is the National media's coverage of these gaffes? Why isn't it this news, but it was news when Quayle spelled potato incorrectly? Could there be a bias in the press. Why doesn't the mainstream press play some of the more disturbing clips of Obama reading from his own book where he makes racially offensive remarks like "whitey's greed" etc.?

Re: Iowa and the road to the Whitehouse
Why won't Barack Obama release his birth certificate to the media? It exists--his campaign actually cited it on their own webpage--but there's something on it that Obama doesn't want publicly known.
