It's received a perfect or near perfect score from practically every major critic source.

It's definitely not out of the discussion.

Odelay is every bit as flawless as DSOTM.

I'm not saying it's not good, but I've never fully embraced it. I think his lyrical style, while often brilliant, can sometimes grate. Also, this was the beginning of the condensing of his sound into a much narrower range of style, which was one of the biggest things I liked about his earlier stuff. I feel that he's never touched the eclectic majesty of Mellow Gold again since, and some of the music in the direction he has gone in since just leaves me kinda cold.

I grant you I haven't seen all the top music polls out there, but of the ones I have seen, I don't remember seeing Odelay in the top ten.

Sidetrack: I did recently see Pitchfork's top tracks of the 90s, with Neutral Milk Hotel's Holland 1945 rated higher than Smells Like Teen Spirit. LOL.

Odelay has a narrower sound? Uhh, you're not very observant, are you. Or maybe you mean that there is an emphasis on consistency?

It just feels that way because he's not going from one genre to another from song to song. He's blending like 5 genres a song in Odelay, seamlessly moving from dancable pop rock to hardcore, to rootsy blues and funk. The lyrics are maybe not as great as Mellow Gold's, but they're still abstract and interesting. Odelay definitely had a bigger emphasis on music rather than lyrics.

Odelay is def the better product than Mellow Gold. I probably like MG better as well, but Odelay is just the shit.

I didn't say anything about Pitchfork, but since you brought it up, almost any album that rates as a 8/10 on PF is a fantastic album. Odelay of course is about a 10, and honestly the review says all that needs to be said.

I rarely go there, but I have been impressed with their reviews. Just not impressed with putting NMH ahead of Nirvana in that instance.

Pitchfork is for pretentious hipsters.

What ever happened to listening to an album and basing your opinion on what you heard instead of having someone else listen to it for you and tell you their opinion?

That post wasn't directed to you are anyone in particular. It was just commentary on pitchfork.

And after that? Seemed pretty directly related to my referencing critics like PF.

Maybe this is a miscommunication, but I definitely formulate my own opinions on music, and why it's good or bad. Odelay is a fucking masterpiece.

PF is in love with that album. It's not that great, even seems really generic at times.

Nah, it's too off-kilter to be generic.

Well you brought them up and I can't stand them so I commented on them. IDK.

I just hate how pitchfork is the first place people go when a band is mentioned to them. I have a friend who I was suggesting bands to online once and for every band I mentioned he went straight to pitchfork to see what the scores of their reviews were for it. "oh this got an 8.5, it must be good"

listening to Thin Lizzy-Cowboy Song

Well, my host here in London has this fantastic Bang & Olufsen stereo and an incredible collection of classical music. I am listening to Bach. I have been so unhappy. But this music soothes me.

Bach is awesome. This performance of Brandenburg Concerto 3 i. is flawless*, but it doesn't seem like it's available on CD anywhere.

*not that I'm a classical snob like you find on some reviews at Amazon. To me it either sounds great or it doesn't.
