This a.m. on NESN Eckersly called Buchholz start a "do or die" for him, noting that with days off in weeks coming, there will be some weeks where no 5th starter is needed.

With Colon and/or Paul Byrd as 5th starter options, I think there's some validity to Eck's comment.

Get it fkn done, Clay.

Initially I thought it was dumb to not play Tek tonight, seeing as how he looks to be coming around, however thinking about it this is a good idea. It gives him a needed day off and he can feel good about things all day long, thus making the rest possibly more beneficial.

Alfonso Marquez is behind home plate tonight. Marquez appears to be fair with respect to both Boston and Baltimore, although Baltimore won 6-3 the last time he called a game between the two (June 2, 2008).

You know, Clay Buchholz has been the unluckiest pitcher on any contending AL team this season. (Source BP; stat "LUCK.") Yeah, he's struggled, but he's not been as bad as the W-L record would suggest: with Boston, he should be nearly a .500 pitcher as well as he's thrown.

Buchholz OPS allowed by catcher:

Varitek: .866

Cash: .618

Should be an exciting game.

Clay Buchholz needs to learn how to be a pitcher from Daisuke Matsuzaka. They have a similar style, except that Daisuke knows how to get out of the trouble he gets himself into.

If he can't close down this inning against the bottom of the friggin' Orioles' lineup I want him on the road to Pawtucket by the beginning of the next inning.
