Re: Shaq Traded?
I think this is a move made for Stoudamire. They feel he's playing out of position right now, and this move will let him play his natural position.

Re: Shaq Traded?
This is a bad move from the looks of it, but I believe D'Antoni said that they have won divisions and high seeds with their current formula of playing, but that hasn't gotten them what they wanted, so they're going to try to slow it down more and become more of a halfcourt offensive team.

Re: Shaq Traded?
You'd think it was a bad move, but like YS said they made the move to get Stoudamire to his natural position. Besides, they weren't going to pay Marion anyway.

Re: Shaq Traded?
It's been awhile for me on here, but I thought I'd comment because I'm in the middle of all this.
First let me say I'll miss Marion. He's my favorite player in the NBA. He was a great asset to the team and one of the best players in Suns history.
Now, regarding the statement of Shaq being hurt all the time, our medical staff said they can work on him to get him back into near his old self. Alot of people have regarded our medical staff as one of the best, it's the main reason (besides a chance at a ring) that Grant Hill came here. That says wonders. Now if he does get into shape and stay healthy alot of things happen.
First, Amare doesn't have to guard the bigs of the West. Let
s face it, Amare is big but at 6'10" 240 hes pretty undersized compared to the Yao's, Bynum's, Duncan's, etc. of teh West. This will allow him to play his natural position, and keep him out of foul trouble from having to guard people bigger than him. When he's in fouul trouble his entire game changes. He can't be agressive on the offensive end of the floor (because of potential offensive fouls) and can't even try to play any defense.
Now with Shaq on Duncan, Bynum, and Yao Amare is guarding smaller guys than he was and won't be having as much of a problem guarding them as he did against the true Centers of the league.
One of the biggest complaints that I have heard here on read online is that Shaq can't run. True, but think about it. When do you see ALL 5 Suns on the floor running the break? Never. Normally it's Nash with two wingmen, if even that many. Sometimes it's Barbosa by himself because he's so fast. Shaq actually helps the break by getting blocks and rebounds which start the break. You can't break without getting the ball first. And the Suns get KILLED on the offensive glass nightly, and just Shaq's presence alone helps that category tremendously.
Another thing that Shaq brings is a great personality. Now, I love Matrix, but apparantely he was causing some locker room problems, and everyone knows that he asked to be traded before the season started. Also, one of the local radio guys pointed it out that the Suns don't seem to be having fun this year. Shaq can and will help fix that.
Another thing Shaq brings is a toughness and size and a meanness in the middle that if anyone gets a few buckets in a row, he will let them know (inadvertant elbow, shove, whatever) that those kind of things won't be tolerated.
One thing that is overlooked is his ability to pass as well.
This does benefit Amare GREATLY. On defense and on offense. Huge deal, my initial reaction to the possibility was no, but after I thought about it I really like the thought of Shaq in Phoenix.

Re: Shaq Traded?
Not sure I see how this makes the Suns better, to be honest. Bad trade for 'em, in my opinion. They were my pick, too.

Re: Shaq Traded?
the suns need a defensive presence
they still may even with this deal
im not sure oneill brings this anymore nor has he in a few years
he will rebound and in this offense should get 30 a night but he'll need to make his free throws and defend the low post better than he did in miami if phoenix is to move on.
marion is decent but i feel hes a product of the system
look for a dramatic fall off in scoring when he gets to miami

Marions one of the best defenders in the League, though. I think Phoenix regressed a little bit... doesn't help that their acquisition is about to be one-upped by the Mavericks, who are about to get Kidd.

Marion's defense I believe was a product of the way they played. I'd be hard pressed to call it good, because they always gave up tons of points and put minimal effort on the defensive end. He's going to be much better off playing in half court sets down in Miami, IMO, he'll be markedly better playing man/zone defenses in a place where the whole team plays a little defense, and his offense will be reduced to running around picks, but I really can see him blossoming in Miami if they commit to the fast break. They really can too, Banks, Williams and Wade all can push the ball, Haslem and Blount can get up and down the floor, and Dorrell Wright is really going to blossom as a wing player soon.

But my point is that they already had a guy who was playing good enough defense to be considered every year in the Defensive Player of the Year voting on a pathetic defensive team. Can they really expect Shaq to play better defense than him? They're still going to suck on defense so long as Nash continues to be among the leagues worst defenders.
And is just twilight-of-his-career Shaq really the most you can get for Shawn Marion? Hardly. Bad trade.
In retrospect, making a move was the right choice in light of the Mavericks acquiring Kidd. They just made a bad move, in my opinion.

Shaq is gonna be nice for them, it'll allow Amare to free lance a lot more and use his athleticism to his advantage and create matchup problems. Shaq, Amare, Hill, and Diaw is a really good and versatile frontline.
Everyone has this negative connotation with Shaq. Yes he's fat and old, but he's going to make his teammates ten times better, and he also knows his role at this point in his career.

Re: Shaq Traded?
Shaq will be able to match up with Duncan, Ming, etc. in the playoffs. The team, as presently constructed, was not going to win a championship, and those matchups were a big reason why.
Also, look at when his contract is coming off the books. If they were to keep Marion, they'd have to sign him to a long term deal. As is, his contract comes off the books in '10.
Other Notable Players who are 2010 FAs:
Amare Stoudamire
Brandon Roy
Manu Ginobili
Kevin Durant (Team Option)
TJ Ford
Amare Stoudamire (Will need to lock up, Shaq's money may help them)
