One week into ST and the Sox surplus of SPs is starting to put them in a strong bargaining position.

Brian Lawrence - Nationals

National's SP, Brian Lawrence was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The injury was discovered in an MRI conducted Friday night, team doctor Bruce Thomas said Saturday......Thomas said the best-case scenario has Lawrence returning after midseason; at worst, the right-hander will be out until September.

Kip Wells - Pirates

Kip Wells was found to have total blockage of the axillary artery in his pitching arm. There's no timetable for his return.

Wells was examined Saturday in St. Louis by Dr. Robert Thompson, a surgeon who specializes in blood clots, after complaining of arm fatigue in his right arm. The angiogram revealed that Wells had complete blockage in the main artery, located under the clavicle, which supplies blood to the upper extremities. The Pirates aren't planning to comment further until Wells receives a second opinion. Assuming that he'll miss at least the start of the year, the Pirates will have to include two from the group of Victor Santos, Ian Snell, Ryan Vogelsong and Sean Burnett in their rotation.

Carl Pavano - Yankees

Yankees manager Joe Torre today indicated that Carl Pavano (back) might open the season on the disabled list.

"I'm not banking on him Opening Day," Torre said. "There's no rush even right there to have him ready Opening Day. The thing I think is important is he probably feels better than he did anytime last year." We find that a little hard to believe. The Yankees aren't going to need a fifth starter until April 15 -- and not for a second time until April 29 -- so it would make sense for Pavano to open the year on the DL if he's going to be behind at all.

Troy Percival - Tigers

36-year-old Troy Percival said he's ending his comeback attempt and putting his career on hold because of continued elbow soreness.
