Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
in the era of the hard salary cap what the pats have accomplished is just miraculous.
with all the free agent defections from wide outs to the offensive line to the dbax they have still maintained success where many other teams are 1 and done.
they lost pretty much all their original coaches as well
how many men is belichek going to make filthy rich??
and for the record
gary sheffield didnt win jack shit in pinstripes and as of this hour neither did mabeline rodriguez

In the later rounds you have to get a little lucky sometimes unless you know something that nobody else does. If Tom Brady had shown capable of becoming what he has become, he wouldn't have fallen so far... believe that. So they certainly got lucky but they're not blindfolding themselves, tacking names up on the wall, and throwing darts at them to determine who they pick... you don't draft someone unless you think they could potentially fit onto your team somewhere.

I think you are right on here....I think the pats saw the talent but had no idea what he could become. With that said I also think the pats valued him higher than where they picked him. The pats seem to wait to draft someone, even if they really want them, until right before they think that person will be picked up. If they thought brady would go in the the 4th round, they probably would have grabbed him....pure specualtion though

And it doesn't take anything away from the people involved in assembling these teams... every team has guys that perform well above what was expected of them at the NFL level. The Tom Brady, Terrell Davis, Rod Smith, Keenan McCardell type guys are a rarity, but the point still stands.
Those are just examples off the top of my head, I know there's more guys like that who may be better examples, but Smith and McCardell each went undrafted.
Like I said, you don't draft someone just to draft somebody. It doesn't work like that... you have to like some things about a player to take a draft pick on him, especially when he's eventually going to be your backup QB to Bledsoe since Bledsoe gets hit a lot because the only thing less mobile than Drew Bledsoe is a statue of Drew Bledsoe.

I saw Michael Bishop playing in the CFL the other day. I remember watching that guy back in college back when K State would load up with creampuffs in their non-conference schedule. Now that I think of it, New England might've started the love affair with the backup quarterback -- I remember you guys all wanted Bishop to play over Bledsoe. Did you guys really hate Bledsoe that much?

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
i loved him but my dad had him pegged as an ineffective statue long before brady inherited the gig
he saved the franchise in newengland as orthwein was a bush and had st louis pegged before kraft got involved
he had incredible #s early in his career and we had no idea what lie with brady
when i look back at all the 4th quarter pix and sacks he took it was evident i was blinded by his gun and didnt see the bigger picture of game management

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
Is there even any doubt anymore, that if Brady had all these weapons for his entire career he would have the stats of Peyton Manning? I don't think so.

It's still early in the season, but it's possible. Brady could really care less about stats though, the 3 rings is what matters and he's working on #4

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
21 TD passes in 6 games, no? The record is 49. Needs 28 more in 10 games, not completely out of reach. We'll see.

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
Hey Patriots. Um, this isnt really all that funny. The rest of the league would like to play...
What I find interesting is that they played one of the best teams in the league. That team played about as good as they could play. The Patriots played substandard Pats football and yet they still won by 21. Nobody touches this team this yr. Nobody. They are probably the best football team I have seen in my lifetime

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
I can see the Patriots losing. In week 15. Because all their starters will be benched. And Kellen Clemens will be seasoned by then.
Besides that, they can run the table.

Re: Patriots Season Game Thread
Chris Collinsworth just said he think that the Pats are possibly the best team he's ever seen in his lifetime. He's seen some damn good teams too...
