Of course the Yankees would grab a player that would cheat the system like that.
Can someone explain to me in non-financially-technical language exactly what the Red Sox did wrong? I know little to nothing about the financial side of baseball so I'm curious as to how annoyed I should be with my favorite team in this instance.
Outfielder Albert Guaimaro has agreed to a deal with the Marlins, outfielder Simon Muzziott signed with the Phillies for $750,000, infielder Antonio Pinero signed with the Brewers for $375,000 and infielder Eduardo Torrealba signed with the Yankees for $300,000. Torrealba has already begun his first steroids cycle under the Yankees tutelage.
There's a lot of discussion of this in the main prospect thread starting around here:

Per MLBTR: However, Boston circumvented that limitation by “packaging” more premium prospects with lesser prospects; that is, paying $300K for multiple prospects that employ the same trainers/agents and then allowing the players’ representatives to divide the lion’s share of the collective sums to the top prospect of the bunch, with the lesser prospects receiving a smaller portion of the money.
Basically, they cheated the system to overpay certain prospects.
Ex. if they could only pay $300K for a prospect, they gave $600K to two prospects and had their trainers split it $500K to one prospect and $100K to the other prospect.
I reserve my right to change my opinion on all of this and proclaim the whole affair an appalling miscarriage of justice, if not an outright anti-Boston conspiracy, if any of these kid actually turn out to be good.
Can someone explain to me why the players get to keep the money? Fucking seriously. Have the MLBPA donate it to charity or something, these players are fucking with the system, and now they get to keep their signing bonuses, and get additional money on top of it? How does that make any fucking sense?
These kids usually don't even know of the dealings the agents/buscones are doing on their behalf, and I can't for the life of me fathom why any of you would think otherwise. Most of these kids can barely write/read at a third grade level, and they're going to take part in complicated negotiations like these?
wow. alot of assumptions being made in this thread about the living conditions and education of Latino players.
i guess if the players were international signings from France the assumption would be they live in castles and be university educated.
soxprospects has come out with a new podcast where they talk about the situation.

I can't pretend to know anything about the background of these particular individuals, but even if they came from wealthy, affluent families, I wouldn't really expect them to understand the ins and outs of MLB's international amateur system. I imagine they were being misled/manipulated here as well, and I can't say I'm sad that some of them might get to pocket a few extra $ from the whole affair. The Red Sox certainly won't miss it.
They don't come from affluent families. There are exceptions (usually they move to the US though). But the idea that most of these kids come from slums and horrible living conditions is spot on. In general, that's why they play baseball instead of going to school: So they can find a way out of poverty.
He's not being lazy. You are just a jackass.
Cardinals finally get fined for hack on Astros:

Cards lose a se cond and third round pick and some money for hacking the 'Stros.
We lose 5 prospects and get a two year ban on international signings for what we did.
Am I missing something?
I'd rather lose the guys we did than a 2nd and 3rd rounder. Also, I don't believe we were "banned" from international signings, just that we could not sign guys subject to bonus pools.
You could also say that the Cardinals guy was a rogue employee whereas the Sox was an organizational decision.
Good points, but I seriously doubt nobody else knew about the how that "rogue" employee got his information. Just my opinion.
I will say that the ban on players "subject to the bonus pool" was still significant.
We got some awesome players through the international market recently: we often paid penalties for going over the allotted pool limit, but at least we got to sign some top prospects.
