I love the 8 K's in 5 innings. Other than his plus fastball, what are his other best pitches?

Buchholz has a low-to-mid 90s four-seam fastball, a two-seam fastball, a slider, a hard 12-to-6 curveball, and a change-up. In 2006, Buchholz actually let loose towards the end of the season, when his fastball was sitting around 96 mph. However, over the course of the season his fastball typically sits around 93-94 and tops out at about 97 mph. His change-up is generally a straight change that sits around 78-82 mph; he also throws a circle change. Best curveball in the organization. Good demeanor on the mound. Pitches well under pressure, pitching coaches have said he has ice water running through his veins. Needs to improve his consistency slightly, but otherwise has ace makeup.

I noticed that Phil Hughes in 2006 was rated 39 (Just after Papelbon 37 and Bailey 38) and in 2007 as in top 5. Buchholz in 2007 was rated at about 51. Think after this year if he tears it up, he will come up in the top 15 prospects ? This is off baseball america

I agree. He hasn't really been challenged at any level yet and people say his stuff is tremendous. He and Ellsbury could be break the top 20 next year, easily. Ellsbury is leading the minors in hitting right now and has an OPS above 1.000 without a HR. That's pretty impressive.

1. Clay Buchholz, rhp, Double-A Portland (Red Sox)

Ascending as rapidly as any pitching prospect in baseball, Buchholz struck out 17 batters in 12 innings last week. He didn't issue a walk and allowed just two runs on seven hits. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder has a 1.98 ERA and 35 strikeouts vs. 3 walks in 27 1/3 innings. Just nine of the 55 lefties Buchholz has faced have reached base, while he has struck out 20 of them. He's positioning himself as a strong candidate to start in Fenway this season.

Wow. So he could definitely be a late season callup? That'd be fun to see.

Im not sure he gets the call this season, the Red Sox apparently want to limit him to around 155 innings this season, and theres a number of SP options ahead of him right now. Depends on if we have injuries or not but at the moment id say he probaly finishes in AAA with a chance at a September callup.

Oh my God. That's disgusting. How long does this kid NOT pitch for the sox? I understand letting a guy mature, especially someone with as little time actually pitching as Buchholz. But those numbers are bordering on MLB ready dominance.

There isn't a spot for him currently, but did Jon Lester ever pitch this well in the minors? I might be too picky, since Lester was the Sox pitcher of the year and I believe the pitcher of the year in the Eastern League once. I'm just looking at the boxscores and it looks like dominance from Buchholz. That's great.

Garza did the same thing for the Twins but when they promoted him, he wasn't very good.

Buchholz needs a little more time. Hughes really benefited from the extra time. And Buchholz isnt as far along stuff wise as Hughes was at this time last yr. Let him develop.

As far as waiting it out, I agree. Clay should not see above AAA this year. Let him refine his already excellent command.

As to the other part, stop articulating from your sphincter. He's certainly as far along as Hughes in terms of stuff. In fact he's beyond. He throws for greater velocity and he already has what scouts call two ++ pitches in his curve and his change. Sure, he's older than Hughes was at AA, but he's actually been pitching less time than Hughes. Buchholz is a two way player from JC converted into a pitcher. Before he transfered to JC, he was an outfielder for a D-I school.

Like it or not, Buchholz might just be better than Hughes.
