I think we could see Clay start out at AA Portland in 2007.

Sure why would we want a 25 year old stud with proven ML credentials when we have the future.

Can we just cut to 2008? Please?

I get the feeling that next year, even if the FO makes some good moves this team won't be better than they were this year. It's the year after that where I expect them to field a tremendous team.

This is a hard call. I probably would because this team badly needs a #2 pitcher to fill in next year and for after Schilling retires. Willis is a very good pitcher. It just depends on whether or not the team plans on making a run on a pitcher of that caliber (say, Zito) without trading Bucholtz through FA or an alternative trade.

I think if there's some way to get a good pitcher (even at cost) without trading a prospect we're better off.

In '08 Lowell will be gone, as will Schilling, and Gonzo. Tek will be in the last year of his contract and he'll probably be broken down. Manny will be in the last year of his contract and age 36 and it is unlikely that he and Ortiz will be producing at the same high level. What looks so promising about '08? We will have two aging star hitters and Beckett and Papelbon, if he doesn't blow out his arm. The young talent coming from the farm has not been overwhelming. The Marlins had completely torn down their team, and have already rebuilt into a playoff contender. The Red Sox with their retooling process have managed to quickly knock themselves from playoff contention without restocking the team with top young talent. Crisp has been a disappointment. The kid pitchers other than Papelbon have not shown much. MDC has been useful, but Hansen has looked lost. Pedroia hasn't shown enough with the stick to justify handing him the ML job. The Sox FO has to make some bold moves in '07 otherwise even '08 will not be that great.

why do you even WATCH baseball? you're so damn negative.

A simple rephrasing could turn most of those negatives into positives. They will still have Manny and Ortiz, who could be putting up the same tremendous numbers that a 1st Ballot HOF and MVP caliber player should put up. they will also have Beckett and Papelbon. We have a farm system comprised of guys who haven't had MLB experience, just like the Marlins. We spent more than any team other than one on drafted talent this season and have a number of promising players who could contribute. Crisp will be 29 that season, hopefully hitting his stride after a slow start. Wily Mo Pena could be a beast and a more than adequate #5 hitter. Youkilis will be like 28 and a .415 OBP hitter who can play two positions at above-average level. They will have added some good players with some of the money they saved. They have Hansen and Delcarmen, who have both shown nice growth in my opinion. Neither is entirely ML ready, but they will be.

I'm negative? The FO gave up on '06 before it started and you are looking past '07 to '08 and I'm the negative one? I wanted to win this year, and I want the FO to kick into gear in the offseason and make some moves to put the '07 Sox in a position to win. If they wait around and do little to build the major league roster in '07 with the hope of the farm yield ing a big crop in '08 they could be making a big mistake. That is what my post was meant to illustrate. I'm not wishing for '08 to get here. I'm wishing that the FO learned from it's '06 mistakes and that it builds a winner around Manny, Ortiz, Schilling, Papelbon, Beckett, Tek and Lowell while we still have them and they are productive. Looking past '07 is negative.

It would be nice if people could stop hijacking the prospect threads so we can talk about the individual player here not stuff that should have happened.

Sorry JSinger. My bad. I got a little carried away, I know that you put a lot of effort into updating these prospect threads. They are very informative, and we all appreciate it.
