Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
Portland won the deciding game 5 tonight over the Trenton Thunder, 9-2. Ramirez, Moss, West, and Youngbauer all hit one out.
Wade Miller used tonight's game as his rehab start.
2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Hansen pitched a perfect 9th.

It's been said time and time again. You're going to have to wait until next year to see a healthy, 100%, Wade Miller. Please don't get down on the guy for anything he's done this season, because I have a feeling you're really going to regret it next year.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
I agree with that assessment. Wade Miller, when healthy, could be a really good pitcher at the back end of the rotation next year. I'm slightly upset because him not being on the 60-day DL takes a possible playoff eligibility spot from someone that could help us this year.
Here are the pitchers that are playoff eligible:
Curt Schilling
David Wells
Matt Clement
Tim Wakefield
Bronson Arroyo
Jeremy Gonzalez
Jonathan Papelbon
Chad Bradford
Mike Myers
Mike Timlin
Keith Foulke
Matt Mantei - 60 day DL
Wade Miller - 15 day DL
We can replace Mantei's eligibility with another pitcher (I'm assuming Delcarmen, Hansen, or Harville). I think we can still replace Miller if we upgrade him from the 15-day to the 60-day. He obviously doesn't have it this year, so lets shelve him until next year.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
I really believe MCHammer that Wade Miller shjould just put off on returning this season and the rotation thats going right now in Schilling, Wakefield, Arroyo, Clement and Wells I think is very suitable and capable of going rest of 05 and into October. Im sure he will come back next spring as the Wade Miller that pitched for the Astros, maybe if by some chance we have a sizable lead before the yankee series and he could make a spot start before then so could have our starters have an extra day of rest, only viable option right there. Right now in a key series this pennant push I would cringe if he was given the ball

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
How long is he signed for? I also totally agree, to have him be solid next year would complete a very good rotation, and also help the pen next year. Think about it, Wakefield and Wells have been very good this season, better than their stats say, Clement has talied off a bit, but we all know how good he can be, Schilling should be back to old form next season, and we say his work in the 04 post-season. If Miller can reurn to his Astro-form, then we'll be sending a good solid pitcher out the mound everyday, this way we can send Arroyo to the pen wehre he is very effective and should improve.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
Miller was signed to a one season contract with a club option for him to return next season

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
Craig Hansen (tired arm) closed out Portland's victory yesterday firing a scoreless ninth.
Hansen retired Trenton on three groundball outs and his fastball was consistently in the mid 90s and he hit 97 miles per hour on the stadium radar gun at least once.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
Why is Hansen not up with the big league club, I know he had dead arm but he seems fine now, are you allowed to kick someone off the 40 man for another guy?

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
They won't bring him up because if he fails on the big stage down the stretch their afraid that might really hurt him in the future, and lets be real sox fans are not forgiving or rational. Usually.

This was his first appearance since the "dead arm" waiting period. He's the future, so they are going to be cautious. If he's healthy and feeling fine, I'm sure we'll see him throw for the big league club before the season ends.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
Their only caution about bringing him up is what ksushi said, theyre worried he'll end up like Cla Meredith, ever since he got sent back down he's done terribley in AAA, hopefully he recovers from that. I don't understand though, how would failure affect how a prospect plays when being sent down? I mean it doesn't hinder development, maybe scares 'em a bit but I still don't understand it.

If you suffer mentally from blowing a game, then you got to wonder if he'd have the balls to pitch in Boston anyway.

Re: Sea Dogs Playoffs/Hansen returns
The Sea Dogs beat the Akron Aeros 6-4 in the first game of a best of five Eastern League Championship Series. Jon Lester picked up the win. Durbin and Moss left the yard.
