Prospect will pitch: The Red Sox will give highly-touted prospect Jon Papelbon the start for Thursday's game, and Francona is looking forward to seeing him pitch.
"I've never seen this kid," said Francona. "I'm excited. This is worth getting on a bus for a couple of hours. I've heard a lot of really good things about him. He could get lit up tomorrow. That's not going to change the organization's view. But from what everybody says, this kid is gonna be pretty good, so it will be fun to watch him pitch."
The 24-year-old Papelbon went 12-7 at Class A Sarasota last year, posting a 2.64 ERA in 24 starts.

Re: Jon Papelbon
I'm a total fan of "Pap" now when he brushed back Sosa after Cabrera hit Payton on the hand, he showed a lot of courage there IMO

Re: Jon Papelbon
In his first start for Portland, Pap went 6 innings giving up two solo homers (5 total hits) while striking out 7 and walking none. Portland is a homerun happy ballpark, so don't be surprised if the HR numbers rise this season, but I expect the peripherals to remain great.

Re: Jon Papelbon
Papelbon has also been very good, but not as impressive as Lester when you factor in that Pap is 24 and Lester is 21. 10 starts, 61.2 IP, 42 H (7 HR), 53/17 K/BB, 2.48 ERA. He still has great stuff and could be a #2 starter for us, but he needs to pitch well, and quickly, due to his age.

Re: Jon Papelbon
Is Papelbon getting called up to the BoSox or AAA? Im confused by this quote at the top of the page.

"I've never seen this kid," said Francona. "I'm excited. This is worth getting on a bus for a couple of hours. I've heard a lot of really good things about him. He could get lit up tomorrow. Re: Jon Papelbon
hes already in triple A, Schilling should return the next game Clement was supposed to start which should still be an easy game for him to do, Game 1 Against Kansas City in Fenway on August 1st. I do believe Schilling has his stuff and Sox need him now more than ever to come back

Re: Jon Papelbon
I think he should get the start....what better way then to bring the kid in against Kansas City. Best chance to succeed in his first start and would give him some confidence. Then if that confidence were to continue he could jump in the bullpen.
Delcarmen should not be the first and last call up for the Sox. Youkilis needs to get called back up after he is destroying AAA. Hansen may get a chance as well. Lets have the kids get a chance to save the Sox depth.

Re: Jon Papelbon
Tony G pretty much has the 2nd base/shortstop area pretty well--man oh man he proved he could do defense last night for sure--Alex Cora will become expendable im think when Mark Bellhorn comes back off the DL, then they can move Youkilis up, but who knows maybe Youkilis will get the call up if the Twins deal does go through with him becoming the new starting 3rd baseman.
