Re: Devern Hansack
This from Peter Gammons latest column:
Essentially, there's nothing on the market except for Tony Armas, which has been discussed, so if spring training were to open Monday, 28-year-old Devern Hansack, the Nicarauguan veteran who threw a five inning no-hitter the last day of the season, would be the first choice as closer.
I'm not sure Hansack is quite that good of a prospect.

Re: Devern Hansack
Hansack's been impressive - 3 runs in 9 innings pitched plus a no hitter, but I don't think he's ready for the closer role

Re: Devern Hansack
It's not optimal, obviously, but among the options in the fold right now, I guess I'd give Devern a look. Sox Prospects scouting report below shows that he probably has the stuff to compete. Most important, he seems less likely to commit the cardinal sin of the closer - the free pass. That said, it might be preferable to convince Tavarez that 2007 games can have 14 innings and have him close.
Sox Prospects: http://www.soxprospects.com/players/hansack-devern.htm
Scouting Report: Hansack is a lanky righty who throws a lot of strikes. His arsenal includes a four-seam fastball that sits around 92, a two seam fastball with some movement, a good low 80s change-up, as well as a tight slider which he utilizes as his out pitch. Good command of all of his pitches. Forceful delivery. Pitched in the Houston organization from 1999-2003, but was released in the Spring of 2004. In 2004 and 2005 he pitched in a Nicaraguan professional league, where he also had to work as a lobsterman to make ends meet. Hansack is of Creole heritage and speaks Creole, English, and Spanish. Signed by Ben Cherington. There has been some confusion as to Hansack's true age, as his birth year has been listed as 1978, 1980, and 1982, but Boston lists Hansack as being born in 1978.

Re: Devern Hansack
it makes sense ya know. He has thrown 5.1IP of major league baseball, so why not install him as a closer out of ST. Sound reasoning theo.

Yeah, it sounds a little iffy, but as you have pointed out to me a couple of times - what other options are there? It is looking more and more like the closer is going to have to come from within. Gagne is out, Dotel is signed, Cordero isn't going to happen, and Paps is in the rotation. Hansack's got a good k:bb ratio, burned through the minors - why not give him a shot in ST and see what he can do? Hansen? I don't think so. MDC? Screams set-up man to me. I'm not saying he is going to be '06 Paps, but he could be servicable.

Re: Devern Hansack
With the sorry state our bullpen is in right now, if Rich Garces signed he'd be our closer.

Re: Devern Hansack
I am perplexed, would that be an understatement?

Today's Herald article discussing the 3 moves yesterday, mentioned that Donnelly enters the list of **current Sox who could end up being closer
Brendan Donnelly
Mike Timlin
Craig Hansen
Devern Hansack
2006 Draftee Bryce Cox

I'm not sure we still have him but I like Kyle Snyder in the long reliever role. He seemed unhittable every game through 4 innings then fell apart fast.

Re: Devern Hansack
Snyder is a guy you try to hide in AAA and only bring up in emergencies.
