Default Nick Hagadone

Red Sox first pick of the 2007 draft and #55 overall

Info from Soxprospects.com
Quote:
Age: 21
Born: January 1, 1986
Sumner, WA
Height: 6-5
Weight: 230
Bats: Left
Throws: Left
Drafted: 1st round, 2007; 36th round, 2004 by SEA
How Acquired: Draft
College: Washington
High School: Sumner (WA)
ETA: 2011

Scouting Report: Big lefty closer whose fastball sits in the low 90s and tops out around 95 mph with good movement. Also mixes in a plus biting slider that he uses as his out pitch, a work-in-progress changeup, and is working on developing a splitter. Good control. Team leader and a hard worker. Could work as a starter if he can improve his changeup. Not a lot of miles on his arm.
He's agreed to a $571,000 signing bonus and is said to be headed to Lowell. He'll be interesting to follow, was a CL last year and is being converted into a SP. Throws low to mid 90's topping out at 95. Is left-handed and has a plus slider. His fastball is already above average and his changeup has above average potential also.

His FB topping out at 95 is a bit generous. Most scouting sites say he'll sit in the 90-91 range and top out at 93.

BA is biggest, best, and consistently most objective.

Nick Hagadone

Quote:
Hagadone was a big-bodied lefthander with a low- to mid-80s fastball and solid breaking ball his first two seasons at Washington, and he entered the 2007 season as the Huskies' Friday starter despite having made just five career starts. He has dramatically increased his arm strength and velocity, as his physical ability and improved mechanics came together perfectly. Coach Ken Knudson moved Hagadone back to the bullpen after two starts, and his velocity jumped, as did his performance (1.88 ERA, 10 saves). Hagadone was throwing in the 90-93 mph range and had several outings when he hit 94-95 mph repeatedly. He also features a power slider that's at least an average pitch. While his delivery isn't textbook and his fastball tends to flatten out, he's deceptive, keeps the ball down (one home run allowed) and has some feel for pitching. His changeup also has average potential, and Hagadone likely will be given a chance to start in pro ball.
Pinstripes Propaganda Plus doesn't seem like a worthy investment. I'd go with a scouting site that has no affiliation.

I wonder if they are going to keep him on a 2-inning leash for the rest of the year. I would imagine so since he was relieving in college.

The sox usually put that restriction on pitchers they draft from colleges and assign to Lowell whether they are a reliever or starter. They purposely limit their innings. The next year they work towards building up their innings through full season A ball.

ORS is right on. The kid was a reliever in college, and this is the end pretty much of his first half season as a pro. He isnt stretched out and stretching him out right now is useless. So keep him on the 2IP schedule and build his endurance next season.

Also, not sure if this is how the sox do it, but the yankees typically leave their drafted pitchers on the exact same schedule and do not touch their mechanics for 30 days after they sign. After that they will tinker with the mechanics yet keep them on a similar pitch count that they were on in college/HS. It seems like a solid approach and may be how the sox do it since Hagadone has started a bit slow and has come on recently.
