Erik Bedard
Quote:
Epstein refused to talk specifically about Santana, or Baltimore ace Erik Bedard, whose name was getting linked with the Red Sox more as the day wore on. The clandestine approach was no surprise, especially after Steinbrenner came under fire for making reference to his desire to acquire Santana.
When asked to comment on the trading of a front-line, left-handed starter, Epstein turned it around, saying, “We don’t have one to trade yet. I don’t think we have a front-line left-handed starter on the roster, but I think Jon Lester might become one soon. I don’t want to talk about other teams’ players.”

ESPN's Jayson Stark believes the Orioles' top two offers to date for Erik Bedard are from the Red Sox and Blue Jays.
If the Red Sox have really been involved, they've been as good at keeping it quiet as they were bad at containing the Johan Santana negotiations. It'd been assumed that the Mariners and Dodgers had the top packages on the table for Bedard. The Orioles strongly favor trading him out of the division, so it's possible neither Boston nor Toronto is a serious contender.

This seems like another situation where both teams counter one another to keep each other from making the deal. I can't tell if the Red Sox really do want to make a move for Johan Santana, Erik Bedard, or Dan Haren....or if they are just playing defense against the likes of the Yankees and Blue Jays (there biggest threats for the division next year).

I think they want ALL of them, but only at the right price. Both Bedard and Santana would be great additions, but the Sox simply will not overpay to get them.

Orioles GM Andy MacPhail convinced hard-to-please owner Peter Angelos the team could not be competitive before 2010. That is why in discussions for ace Erik Bedard, the Orioles are looking for players with limited major league service time to build toward 2010. The Mets are trying hard to get in on Bedard, but don't appear to have the right match. Angelos has told MacPhail not to trade Bedard within the AL East.

Re: Erik Bedard
Uhhh yeah, not a shocker. It is one of the things they can do to be competative.

Re: Erik Bedard
This could be a move to get the ball rolling on the Twins. By them throwing out the top deal for Bedard the Twins may think they have a limited amount of time on the Red Sox deal. Then again they may not believe it just as I don't.

Re: Erik Bedard
Angelos is the worst owner. He knows nothing about baseball. I agree with him that you don't want to trade within the division, but if the man had any baseball sense he would shut up, and let the guy he hired do his job and get the best deal possible.

I dont think this gets any ball rolling as I assume the Twins will call the sox bluff here. In terms of Baltimore, they would absolutely want pitching in return, and I dont think the sox want to see Buchholz facing them 6 times a season. At the same time, I dont think the O's want Bedard facing them 6 times a yr either.
