Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
Even after yesterday’s impressive outing for Triple-A Pawtucket, Bartolo Colon is still one more start away from a major league call-up.
That means the Red Sox [team stats] will look to other in-house solutions - David Pauley and Charlie Zink are two Triple-A possibilities - to fill the open starter’s spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Royals.
A decision and announcement are expected from the Sox tonight.

Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
Masterson, Colon to pitch
Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 18, 2008 11:30 AM
The Red Sox have announced the starters for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, against the Kansas City Royals. Justin Masterson will be brought up on Tuesday, swapped with Chris Smith (who came up today). Then Masterson will return to the minors after the game, and Bartolo Colon will come up to the big league club and will pitch on Wednesday.
That leaves the rotation as follows for this week:
Sunday: Josh Beckett vs. Carlos Villanueva
Monday: Jon Lester vs. Luke Hochevar
Tuesday: Justin Masterson vs. Gil Meche
Wednesday: Bartolo Colon vs. Brett Tomko
Thursday: Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Brian Bannister
Since Masterson's April 24 debut against the Angels, the starter has struggled with Portland. Over his last four starts, he has given up 16 earned runs in just 19 1/3 innings. He has taken the loss in three of those four games.

Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
Sweet! Thats good news, I'm really excited to see what Colon can give us, although he still hasn't been completely stretched out as his last start he only threw 64 pitches. You gotta feel bad for Chris Smith though, getting sent down after a mere two day stint with the big league club.

Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
Mike Scocia told Gammons the following about Colon,
"Last year he was good for about eight starts before he ran out of gas".
That may happen again this year. But getting eight to ten starts from Colon, which would be a little over a month of work, may really help.

Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
We'll see how Colon does. I truly hope he gets a chance to pitch against us. For some reason, we pummel Colon.

The Yankees saw Colon at his worst moments in 2006 (3-game losing streak) and 2007 (6-game losing streak), both seasons in which Colon pretty much sucked anyway (5.90 ERA, 7-13 W/L Record for the two years combined). In those two games Colon allowed 14 earned runs to the Yankees in 4 IP.
Excepting those two games, Colon has pitched 11 other games against the Yankees, posting a 4.52 ERA. That's a pretty good ERA to get when facing the Yankees (or the Red Sox).
Colon no longer sucks. I would therefore consider your arrogant assumption that the Yankees "pummel Colon" to be, for want of a better word, hubris.

Re: Sox, Colon reach minor league deal
once Colon comes up, does he have to go through waivers or something to go back to Pawtucket or is the feeling that he'd be up here for good?

Colon is out of options and he's senior enough that he could refuse assignment even if he passed waivers.
He's not going back to Pawtucket.
