Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
Sox talks with Rockies on Tavarez still alive
Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 11, 2008 06:52 PM
MINNEAPOLIS - The Red Sox are still talking with the Colorado Rockies about a deal for reliever Julian Tavarez. News of the talks, first reported in the Denver Post last week, have not died out, but remain active accordiing to a major league source with knowledge of the situation.
The Sox traded Bryan Corey today to the San Diego Padres. With Bartolo Colon (oblique) making progress in his rehab assignment in Pawtucket where he was gunned at 97 mph, the Sox might be trying to find a spot for Colon.
Tavarez is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA, but it's been difficult for the Red Sox to get work for Tavarez. He pitched an inning last Wednesday, but hadn't worked before April 24th prior to that

The Red Sox are still discussing a deal with the Rockies involving Julian Tavarez.
Rather than pick up immediate help, the Red Sox would probably want a prospect from the Rockies. Some possibilities could include outfielder Seth Smith, catcher Michael McKenry and pitchers Jhoulys Chacin, Shane Lindsay and Juan Morillo.

Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
Lindsay would be a good pickup. Good arm, with good strikeout rates.
Doesn't really throw strikes, though.

Haha, Seth Smith, he made the last out in the WS...do we really need to make that a tradition?

Not even close. Fowler is likely an untouchable. There is no way they move him for a washed up long man.

"Untouchable?" Here are the top 20 PECOTA comparables for Dexter Fowler:
1 Sheldon Fulse
2 Rashad Eldridge
3 Dwight Maness
4 Kevin Gibbs
5 Ray Holbert
6 Kenny Kelly
7 Ron Krause
8 Cesar Crespo
9 Keith Mckoy
10 Andre King
11 Brian Hunter
12 Jarred Ball
13 Larue Baber
14 Tarrik Brock
15 Nook Logan
16 Jeff Jackson
17 Nathan Haynes
18 Jamie Athas
19 Carl Everett
20 Dave Krynzel
Carl Everett had an OK career, attitude aside (peak value seven wins a year, but with erratic ups and downs). Brian Hunter and Nook Logan were a rung lower (peak value under four wins a year). The rest were washouts.
You see Tavarez as a "washed up long man;" I see Tavarez as a currently healthy guy who started 23 games last year and is one of the few active MLB pitchers with a demonstrated track record of reasonable success at hitters' paradise Coors Field (career ERA 4.42 in 89.3 IP there). You see Fowler as "untouchable;" I see a guy 85% likely not to have an MLB career worth anything. Cheez, you're so negative about this I'd almost wonder if you even liked the Red Sox.
Oh, wait...never mind.

Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
hes coming around william, its not easy for him but its inevitable.
it will take a few more years of ball numbing sadness to break him but before he puts his 1st kid on the bus he'll be on the right side of the fence...he has a good sense of ethics and a backbone, theres no way fredo steinbrenner and his gaggle of idiots will keep a guy like this on the dark side unless they get back to winning world series titles and that my friends,is a ways away...

Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
I am not saying he is going to be amazing or anything, I am just saying that he is one of their top org prospects whose power is developing, has a good eye and runs like the wind. 5 tool players who are improving as they move up through a system are not easily dealt for. Let alone for crap.

You do realize that Dexter Fowler was a 14th-round draft pick, right? Yeah, he wanted bonus money, but less than a million dollars.
You say "improving;" I check THT and read, "Fowler is a five-tool talent, but not all of his tools are translating to baseball skills; his stolen base success rate is mediocre despite excellent speed and he didn't hit for much power outside of his hitter-friendly home park."
That was written after 2006. In 2007 he dropped from 8 HR to 2 HR for the entire season, dropped from 31 to just 7 doubles, and lost 1% off his stolen base success rate while stealing half as many bases.
He's done well thus far in the Texas League, but it's a hitter's league. I see a guy in his fourth MiLB season who'll have to be 40-man roster protected despite being of questionable value at the MLB level.
This reminds me of Cesar Crespo. Tools do not mean skills.
Are you assessing Tavarez by his dozen innings this year? He's healthy, and he has a good track record starting in Coors Field. He's worth a prospect...let's see if the trade goes down and how much salary Boston has to cover if it does go down. I'll predict that either Colorado picks up the whole contract OR that the talent returned is close to Fowler's worth if a trade is made.

Might not have to worry about it anymore...

Rockies' Talks For Tavarez Dead?
MONDAY: Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says the Rockies' talks for Tavarez are dead. His guess is that the Rockies will end up with Josh Fogg and won't have to give up anyone.

Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
If the Rockies wanted Josh Fogg why didn't they just resign him?

Re: Tavarez to the Rockies?
Sounds like Tavarez is about to sign a deal with Milwaukee.
