Default Tavarez to the Rockies?

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_9163855

The relevant snippets:
Quote:
While they wait for internal options to heal their wounds and fix their mechanics, the Rockies are actively pursuing depth for their rotation, discussing trades with the Reds for Josh Fogg and the Red Sox for Julian Tavarez.

The Rockies' motivation is shaped by their need. Colorado is searching for a pitcher to stabilize its rotation until Franklin Morales, Greg Reynolds and the injured Jason Hirsh are ready to contribute sometime next month.

Like Fogg, Tavarez is a former Rockie. Colorado has discussed acquiring him on multiple occasions over the past three seasons.
Who could the sox legitimately get of value for Tavarez? Word on the street is that one of the reasons that he's been used so sparingly lately is to preserve him for a trade.

And I guess I'm a bad admin, but I just don't want to put this in the rumor mill. I'm considering combining the rumor mill and the talk sox forums anyway.

As much as i don't like Tavarez, he does a decent job at saving the other pitchers arms during a blowout. With the loss of Snyder he is really the only one who can come in a give 3 or 4 innings. I think that he is important to have around since our some of our rotation (lester, Dice-K, and Wakefield) have shown that they can be wild and chased from the game early. Tavarez may not be great, but he is an important piece of the pen.

I don't know if whatever we'd get in return would be enough to offset the clubhouse disruption it would cause. Sometimes it seems like Tavarez is the only guy that keeps Manny in check.

Also, lets not forget

Plus, I've heard this Tavarez to Colorado talk before. It hasn't happened yet...

I think it would have to be a very nice deal for Theo to trade away Manny's best friend. I know it does sound somewhat silly. But we all know how Manny can be. It could not even phase him and he continues with his great start, or he could turn sour and pout and make a stink. He could go either way. To take that risk, Colorado would have to be offering something very vauable IMO.

he's in Pawtucket so he is an option if Tavarez gets traded but to me, far from a viable option

he won't pout if he wants his $20 mil option to be picked up

Oh i did not realize that he had accepted assignment to AAA. Anyway, I doubt that the Rockies will be offering anything of significant value and unless they do, i think it would be a good move to keep Tavarez here.

I agree with this.....risk reward here. Tavarez is pretty popular in the clubhouse. If they get nothing for him, which is more than likely then they shouldnt do it.

I guess the only way they do it is if they know they can get something from Colon or Schilling soon and relegate Wakefield to spot starter/long reliever status

Man will wake have a problem with that....he does not like to pitch in relief, although he is likely to accept it regardless.

he's shown over the years that he's pretty accepting of whatever role the organization wants him to have and it's a credit to his professionalism and loyalty to the Sox

i like tavares,he is very important to have in the bullpen because nobody knows for sure if today is the day that he snaps his carrot and sends a few guys to the IC unit with head injuries and broken hands.
wake is too valuable for the pen
as shown last evening he can still be very effective and as shown thruout his career he can eat 175-200innings for you with an under 5.00 era.
bringing this guy out of the bullpen is a recipe for disaster unless you have a multiple run lead..he had some good #s as a closer but you just invite anxiety with a knuckleballer coming into the game with a 1 run lead.
schill and colon?
schill wont be seen pitching till august minimum
colon may be ready soon
however
colon may never see the major leagues again,i dont know what kind of shape he is in and when he did have success in pawtucket he overthrew and found himself in the trainers room for the past month.
becks dice wake lester and buckholz with the 2-3-4-5 guys switchable
dice k throws 110 pitches thru 5 far too often,i understand they're hitting .160 against him but he's setting himself up for failure by refusing to throw his fastball more often.
ya hes 5*0 with a great era....and thats the bottom line i guess
consider this.
what were matt clements #s in 2005 when he made the allstar team for us??
you cant walk 8 men in 5 innings and expect success and this is essentailly how hideo nomo pitched himself out of baseball.

going into July in 2005, Clement was 9-1 with a 3.33 ERA and ended up with a 4.57 ERA which got ballooned by a handful of god awful starts (see Josh Beckett 2006). But after getting drilled in the head and lit up his playoff start, he tanked 2006 till he got shut down

If Colon can make it back, he'll work middle relief.

Schilling won't be ready anytime soon, and when he is he'll spot start to get/stay sharp. I could even see him getting some scheduled middle relief work on a strict pitch count.

He's a vet and a smart guy who knows and understands the what's and why's of what he's doing this year. Sarting the 1st inning or the 6th inning isn't going to make any difference to him until the season is on the line for the team.

After what he's gone through, there's no way they put him into the regular rotation unless it's the only option they have. Why risk him reinjuring or having his shoulder "run out of gas" before the playoff stretch when you have 5 servicable starters?
