Re: Buchholz to DL; OF Van Every up
I got scared when I saw Buchholz to DL, thinking it was arm issues but its just a broken fingernail

I wouldn't be surprised if the finger issue wasn't seriously and they were just giving him a breather to clear his head.

Note that we're seeing if van Every can handle the load in MLB...looks to me as if a trade for Coco might be looming.

I think they'll be more willing to deal Coco if Van Every looks capable. Moss and Van Every could potentially provide every bit as much depth as Moss and Coco. It's just tough to deal from a position of strength when you see guys like Drew and Ellsbury being banged up as they are.

the concern wasnt that the finger is serious but it could have caused enough discomfort for Buchholz to alter his delivery and thus risk injuring his elbow or shoulder

Only as a throwaway if another OF were needed after a Crisp trade and prior to a Moss return. Nixon no longer has the fielding range or power to deserve a spot in an MLB OF, but he does know Fenway's right field.
Nixon could probably be had for very little; he's worth little, if any, more, even with his particular skill of knowing Fenway.

At this point I'd rather see Youk in RF than Nixon.

Re: Buchholz to DL; OF Van Every up
With Buchholz's innings limit, this injury will allow him to pitch deeper into the season when it matters most. I'm excited to see what Van Every can do up in the bigs .

Re: Buchholz to DL; OF Van Every up
Smith up; Van Every down
Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 18, 2008 12:15 PM
For those of you who missed yesterday's roster move, righthander Chris Smith was brought up to the big leagues today as insurance. With Hideki Okajima likely still sidelined today with a sore wrist, Smith will help fill out a bullpen that was mostly used up yesterday in the doubleheader.
Since Coco Crisp and J.D. Drew are both back to health, Jonathan Van Every was no longer needed by the club.
Smith will only be in Boston until tomorrow, when he'll be sent back to make way for Justin Masterson.
He was 1-2 with a 1.45 ERA in 10 games (four starts) for Pawtucket this season.
