A healthy Beckett is the key to a repeat. Not just physical health, either.

Re: sox.com - Beckett to DL
From the linked article:
Quote:
|
There had been seemingly no time in Josh Beckett’s stay with the Red Sox that he has exuded more -relief/delight/happiness/relief. The right-hander came back from Pensacola, Fla. carrying the clean bill of health delivered by Dr. James Andrews.
|
Quote:
What Beckett didn’t say was that there was some discomfort when throwing his 50-pitch side session Wednesday. Enough so that he continued to pick the brain of Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell regarding what it felt like when the elbow ligament got bad enough that Tommy John Surgery needed to be performed. (Farrell had gone through the process.)
After talking to Farrell, there were enough similarities in the two cases that it caused some concern for Beckett. Red Sox manager Terry Francona had made it clear to Beckett throughout the process that if the ace didn’t feel like his normal self he wasn’t going to send the pitcher out to the mound on Friday.
|
Quote:
After being injected with the dye, Beckett went through approximately 25 minutes in which he underwent analysis by Andrews’ MRI machine. After studying the results, Andrews informed the pitcher that there was no reason to fear the worst, ligament damage. In some respects, because of Beckett’s commitment to taking care of his physical condition in the past few years, parts of his arm looked in better shape than they did in ‘03.
The end result was one happy pitcher, and some equally relieved teammates.
“We’ve got our horse back!” exclaimed Dustin Pedroia after hearing the good news.

Re: sox.com - Beckett to DL
seriously, how can Beckett at all be at fault over any of this?

Re: sox.com - Beckett to DL
at fault for wanting peace of mind that his elbow is healthy. even if you think hes a pussy, do you want him on the hill with doubt in his mind that if he lets go a 96 mph fastball, he'll shred his elbow?

Oh yeah, that's right ...he's a pussy. That doesn't mean that I think he is not an ace pitcher or that he is any bigger of a pussy than the rest of today's players, who in my opinion are all prima donas.

Re: sox.com - Beckett to DL
Yeah BoSox21, common man, you have to realize that Beckett is just not gritty enough. If he's got a broken elbow he should find a way to pitch, let alone some numbness.

Beckett throwing in bullpen
Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff September 2, 2008 03:08 PM
Josh Beckett played long-toss from 60 and then 120 feet and is now in the middle of a bullpen session. He appears to be throwing well, but we'll have more details later

Re: sox.com - Beckett to DL
Quote:
BOSTON -- Josh Beckett long-tossed in the outfield yesterday and plans to have a side session today in anticipation of his return to the mound Friday in Texas.
Beckett hasn’t pitched since Aug. 17 because of inflammation in the elbow and temporary numbness in his right hand and fingers.
His return to health was further slowed late last week when he fell victim to the intestinal bug that swept the clubhouse, but he is at full strength again.
Manager Terry Francona said the Sox would likely limit his pitch count somewhat against the Rangers, but added that that was a reflection of the time he has lost and not the result of any concern over his readiness or physical well-being.
