Actually, yes. Would it surprise anyone?
Do I think they will do it? No..but stranger things have happened. I never in a million years thought I'd see Damon in pinstripes.

Re: Teixeira
With Hanks ego it is entirely possible and the Sox could be ambushed like with Damon. But Theo was busy throwing his hissy fit then and I dont think he'll let it happen this time. If the Yankees did offer 190/8 with a deadline Tex would take it in a heart beat.

Re: Teixeira
There's no such thing as being "out" or "back in" or whatever. Every report that comes out from all these "unnamed sources" or "rival executive" is all part of the negotiations. That's what negotiating in the era of the 24-hour news cycle is all about.
I think Washington has the biggest offer out there for Tex but deep down Tex doesn't really wanna go to Washington and he's instructed Boras to go out and try to get contenders like Boston and Anaheim to get close to or surpass the offer Washington has on the table.
So when John Henry releases a statement saying the Sox have been outbid and when the Angels leak information that they're out of it, their goal is that Tex/Boras will call them back in to keep them interested while trying to give the impression to Tex/Boras that whatever offer they've made is as high as they'll go
Bottom line, if Tex was going to Washington, he would've done so by now. He's either go to Boston, Anaheim or New York if they decide to swoop in at the last minute

Is anyone upset that the Sox don't have Damon now? Why do we even care that the Yankees went so far to sign a player the Sox viewed as good, but quantifiably so?

Re: Teixeira
We are about 72 hrs since Henry's email, and every baseball scribe in the country hasn't sniffed out a higher bid than the Sox' reported 8/170ish offer. It looks like we all thought; there isn't a mystery team and Boras is about to get embarrassed, if he hasn't already.
I think the Sox went into that meeting armed with the knowledge they had the highest bid...it was December 18th and it was time to get it done. Boras wasn't pleased the bidding for Teix spiked around 170 million, so he bluffed. Henry's frustration is because they have placed the highest bid but Boras won't let Teix sign out of frustration.
The Angels got tired of being used, so they told him to fuck off. The Nats announce they don't think there is any way they will win the bidding...and the Yanks haven't offered anything. My own private theory on NYY is they have told Boras off the record that they would rather invest their money in Manny short term, or in Holliday next winter long term, or very possibly both (Damon and Matsui are gone, so the LF and DH spot is open past this season.)
My guess is Theo is waiting by the phone for Boras to call, but Boras is too proud. This will either end quickly in the next few hours, or Boras will decide to re-boot and create a new market, even if it goes into late January. He has some serious face-saving to do here; last winter he absolutely botched the Arod opt-out and got lucky the Yanks took him back, and the Sox won a staredown two winters ago with Dice-K.
The question is will he do the responsible thing an get his client 170 million before it vanishes, or will he let his ego rule this? My gut feeling is at this point Teix is got to be saying "enough already, let's be done before I get made out to be a villain here."

O no sorry you misunderstood what I was saying. I'm not mad about the Damon signing nor do I care I was just trying to say if the Yankees get involved its going to be a situation like that, deal on the table take it or leave it.

2008 Johnny Damon
.836 OPS
38.9 VORP
2008 Crisp
.751 OPS
13.1 VORP
2008 Ellsbury
.729 OPS
16.1 VORP
Nah...why would a Boston fan want Damon instead of those other guys over the course of contract.
Aren't you glad you saved 12 million over 4 years?

Re: Teixeira
That's not a fair comparison, Gom. Ellsbury and Crisp can actually play CF now.

I'm glad we have Ellsbury for the next 5 years without a need to pay him much and the way it has worked out the Red Sox have been better than the Yankees despite how much money you spent on Damon, who also noted that he figured their team would be unstoppable when he was added to the top of that lineup. He's been wrong, the Red Sox have won, the Yankees have not, and the Sox didn't spend money needlessly on an asshole who couldn't care less about the Sox-Yankees rivalry. No biggie, and certainly not something I lose sleep over.

For a corner OF?
He played LF last year, so how about you compare Damon to Manny/Bay, and compare Ellsbury/Crisp to the unending supply of awesomeness you got from Melky/Gardner?
I urge you, good sir to:

Moot point, example. Damon's contract is up after this season. We're not comparing the next 3 years, just the past 3 years and this upcoming season.

Never thought they were out of it, but the fact they drew the line with Boras made it highly unlikely anything gets done.
But with all of these teams dropping out of it, supposedly...
