The Sox won't rely on Wake to be their #5. It all depends if they want quality, or to save some dough.

Epstein was quoted as saying they would expect Wakefield to make "some starts". I don't think he'll be pencilled into the opening day rotation by any means.

Joining the team on the second-half seems ideal to me.

I firmly believe that to keep him healthy, it might be a better idea to just have him come on board in the 2nd half.

You dont need "quality". You need someone you can count on for 6 innings a start to be average. You have Beckett and Lester who will headline the rotation. You will have DiceK who, when healthy, can be a #2 starter in the league, but has some serious injury concerns. You have Buchholz, who is a young pitcher who will be inconsistent and at times dominant. You need a 3rd guy in the rotation whom you can count on for being there all the time and not completely sucking. You need a guy like Brad Penny prior to his run of shit starting in June. Someone who's ERA sits in the high 4s while averaging 6IP per start. Maybe a Jon Garland does the trick? Now, if you dont add a guy like that, a reliable, average but not spectacular pitcher and go with another question mark, then you will suffer

I think the Yankees should add Lackey, Holliday, Figgins and Abreu off the bench this year, all while lowering payroll.... whatdaya think Jacksonian?

LOL

I guess I'm just not that high on Lackey. He seems to be a power pitcher, who's power is fading IMO. But thats just from the eyeball test and some of the games I have happened to see him pitch in(outside of game 1 lol)
According to this article his power isn't fading.
