Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
The Chicago White Sox elected to buyout of Jermaine Dye's 2010 player option of $12M. Making him a free agent.
Quote:
The Chicago White Sox and 2005 World Series MVP Jermaine Dye have parted ways.
On Thursday, Jermaine Dye informed the White Sox that he was accepting his 2010 one-year option for $12 million. The team followed suit today by buying out the popular outfielder's contract for $950,000.
Although this does not preclude the White Sox from re-signing Dye to a contract, it's most likely that the team will go in a different direction in filling their spots at outfield and designated hitter next season.
Dye, 35, signed a two-year, $22 million extension late in the 2007 season. This year, Dye batted .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI in 141 games.
Dye has also played with the Braves, Royals and Athletics. In 14 major league seasons, he has batted .274 with 325 homers and 1,072 RBIs. In five seasons with the White Sox, he batted .278 with 164 homers and 461 RBI.

Nobody is going to have Dye be their everyday OF next year, but since the Sox trade for Hermida, could it possible the two platoon next year? This is what we would be looking at:
vs lefties
OBP .387 SLG .508
vs. righties
OBP .368 SLG .418
It's not Jason Bay or Matt Holliday but as a last resort? I could see it happening. I don't want it to happen, but you never know. He was terrible in the second half of last year, and like everyone has said he has really slipped as an overall player in the past couple years. Maybe if for some reason if we don't get Bay or Holliday and Dye is willing to sign a one year deal for cheap, then maybe. But this guy isn't my A option nor B option to play OF for the Red Sox.

Nope, don't see it happening. But I haven't talked to Theo in a while so who knows....wink wink.

If this is our LF tandem for next season, it's going to be a long long season.

Its not what I want, but I figured it just an idea that could happen. You never know with Theo.

LOL.
Dye is not a player I want in the Sox.
I give Theo more credit than that.

Theo very nearly traded for Dye in 2007.

Re: Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
You know what? Depending on other moves they make (landing a 1B or another SP), this could work. They've already got a massive upgrade in offense from C and I would expect them to have an upgrade over what we saw at SS for most of last season (even if Gonzalez comes back).
Unorthodox, interesting idea, one that I had not considered, but makes a lot of sense if the team is beefed up elsewhere and Dye is signed for short money.

Re: Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
Dye will be 36 next year and had an abysmal second half (.179/.293/.297). I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Neither would I. If we needed a DH, I'd consider him, but not to play the OF.

Re: Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
It's an option. It should be somewhere on the list -- well down below trying to acquire Holliday, Bay, Gonzalez, Cabrera and Hanley.

Re: Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
Dye will be playing for ATL or SF. Maybe NYY if Damon bolts and Figgins/Bay/Holliday are signed.

Re: Dye/Hermida Platoon in LF?
Dye in a platoon is a waste. The guy has enough of a track record to get a 2+ year deal as a starter. I highly doubt he signs on to be the righty portion of a platoon.
