Re: Red Sox 2012/2013 Offseason Thread
There will be several teams competing for Morse, including the Yankees, Rangers, Mariners, and probably a few more. I would hate to see the Sox get into a bidding frenzy and have to give up too much for a guy who walked only 16 times and struck out 97 times last year.

Re: Red Sox 2012/2013 Offseason Thread
It seems like a lot of people really want Morse. I know the Napoli deal is taking forever, but don't set yourself up for disappointment if we do not trade for him. I have not seen much between the Red Sox stating interest in Mike Morse, unlike I have for the Yankees and other teams.
Do you really want Mike Morse over Mike Napoli? Or do you just want Mike Morse if the Napoli deal falls through?
Both are fairly comparable players in terms of offense. Morse has one season of playing 146 games and the rest of his career have been 102 games or less. Napoli has one 140 game season and the rest of his career have been 114 or less. Morse is 30 and Napoli is 31. Morse has had the better average for his career. Napoli has the advantage in terms of OBP. That says a lot, especially since Morse has .036 better batting average and Napoli still has a .009 advantage in OBP. That mean Morse does not walk nearly as much as Napoli. They are identical for career OPS+. Over the last five years, Napoli has had five 20+ HR seasons. Morse has only had one 20+ HR season in his career.
I wouldn't mind if we get Morse if the Napoli deal falls through, but I only want to try to get Morse if we do not sign Napoli. We would only get Morse for one year, and would likely have to give up one of Morales or Miller and a propsect. At the same time, we don't have to give up anything other than cash for Napoli. From the offensive standpoint, I would rather have Napoli who has the better career OBP and very comparable power numbers, which Napoli has more career HR's and RBI's.

That's what I said. FIRST BASE!!!!!!! That's where we need him and if it costs us a prospect, an ML reserve and a reliever I say go. Again and again and again, I do not want Mauro Gomez playing first base for us this year because IMHO it would undo some of the better moves we've made so far this off season. Gomes and Kalish will be fine for LF but Gomez will most not definitely be fine for first base. Get Morse!!!!!!!

It's a one year deal and there are a couple actual 1B in next years FA class. So it could be better then Napoli. I'm not totally selling on Napoli, but obviously there is an issue and neither side seems keen on caving so other options should be sought out. Morse or Morneau seem like the best choices to me.

For 1B it's Morse, Morneau, Konerko and Morales.

I believe the Red Sox will definitely sign Napoli for two years with a mutual option for the third. Reports are that he is not in negotiations with other clubs, so I suspect there will be some posturing, negotiations, and compromises before the signing takes place. It will be similar to the LaRoche deal with Washington.
There simply are too few options for either side. Napoli might get offers but definitely not for three years. The Red Sox might look at other options, but there are no options (including Morse) that are appealing...and won't take away from the current team depth.

If Morneau is available then why not him? Better OBP, Avg, etc. Last season he proved he can be durable once again, only missing 25 games or so. I'd put Morneau before Morse

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington spoke to Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio about the status of free agent Mike Napoli and where the slugger stands with the team. Cherington told Bowden (via Twitter) that Boston is still looking to add offense to the first base position as the club still considers Napoli to be a free agent. He added that the Red Sox will continue to work through the issues of signing Napoli but admits there is no deal at this point
|
If he's not negotiating with other teams his agents should be fired. He has no deal with the Sox at the moment.

He's available as a free agent after this season. He might be available in a trade for this season, but it's not known if Minny is willing to move him.

I have found that Cherington has been very honest during his tenure. If he is saying that he still considers Napoli to be a FA then I would not bank on this deal getting done. He didn't say that he was hoping it would work out, and he said they are looking at 1B. I don't doubr they are looking elsewhere.

That's one thing I think we can give Cherries credit for. Whether we like what he is saying or not, it's usually pretty straight forward.

He's not at all dissembling. One of his first statements when he became GM last year was about Papelbon. He said something to the effect that he would understand if Paps got an offer from another team that he couldn't turn down. The writing was on the wall. Whether people agree with his moves is another issue, but he is pretty honest about his intentions, which is why his statements about thinking the starting pitching is much improved from last year concern me so much. Based on his statements, I think the chances are 10% or less that we add another starter like Marcum or even Jurjens.

Re: Red Sox 2012/2013 Offseason Thread
Is it just me, or have the Red Sox assembling a group of players that were very good in 2011?
The entire bullpen-- Bard/Bailey/Hanrahan/Uehara/Aceves were pretty much lights out that year.
Victorino had a career year. Pedroia and Ellsbury were in the running for MVP for a while there. Napoli was probably right behind them. Ortiz had his best year in a very long time.
