Re: Shane Victornio? If So Cherington Must Go!
This is a puzzling deal for a team trying to show fiscal constraint. He's coming off a career worst season, is 33 for the 2012 season and makes a lot of his hay with his legs. I agree with the sentiments above that a 1 yr deal is a great idea, but 3 yrs at $13 mil per is a major overpay.

He was a top 8 WAR OF prior to a down 2012. Hunter is like like what 3 years older and got 2/26M. It's a market value deal.

Apparently it's not, since there were several teams offering Victorino similar deals, according to reports. It was a fair market deal.

Cleveland offered 4/44M. So the Sox saved 5M and got out a year early.

Given equal offers from Boston and Washington, I'd go with Washington too. He doesn't have to fill a #1/2 spot in a rotation, and gets to pitch against the Mets and Marlins a bunch of times to improve his numbers.
Haren is setting himself up for 1 last big payday.

Not true. He turned 32 last week, he'll be playing his 32/33/34 seasons here. So basically, even in the last year of his contract he'll be younger than the average Yankee.

The Red Sox should have taken him off the Angel's hands when they hand the chance.

Let's not be too hard on him. Red Sox were in a similar boat last off season.
At least Valentine is not on his way in, right Jacko?

Re: Shane Victornio? If So Cherington Must Go!
Victorino is a pretty good player. He's a huge upgrade over what we have been rolling out there in the last 2 years. He is a tremendous fielder. I have seen him play a lot when he was with the Phillies. He always seemed to hurt the Mets more than any Philly other than Utley. I remember a few years ago against Johan (before the injury) he took Johan deep for a big Grand Slam. I was surprised at two things: 1. The size of the contract, but Cherries doesn't have the time to negotiate the lowest possible price. He has too much work to do. 2. His splits against RHP. Overall, he is a solid addition for RF, and I don't think that it necessarily a precursor to moving Ells.

If We paid 39M to Victorino I wonder how much would Swisher and Ross ask...

Re: Shane Victornio? If So Cherington Must Go!
-Does this Victorino deal not suggest that Swisher or Hamilton are out of the picture as potential acquisitions? Surely we would have chosen Swish over Victorino, no? Maybe Swish didn't wanna come to Boston. I would have rather retained Cody Ross at his asking 25m/3-years than get Victorino, though.
-I think Elsbury must be getting dealt so that we can free up some room/money for starting pitching.
-I don't think we would go after Wilson when we already have Bard/Aceves/Bailey?
-Why wouldn't starting pitching be more of a priority than the moves made so far?
I am a newb, someone fill me in. Perplexed here.

Ross probably gets 2/22M(3/27 max) and Swisher gets 5/65M.

They could trade Ells and still be looking for a RF
Swisher will cost more in terms of years and will send the Yankees a supp 1st rounder.

Yep. At the cost of a higher AAV, but still, spot-on.
