Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan
ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes reported that multiple sources confirmed the Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan, a righthander who had a 2.72 ERA with 36 saves in 40 opportunities last season in Pittsburgh.
Hanrahan, 31, makes sense for the Red Sox because questions linger over closer Andrew Bailey, who missed most of last season with a thumb injury and had a 7.04 ERA in 19 appearances when he returned.
Hanrahan made $4.1 million in 2012 and is eligible for salary arbitration in 2013 and eligible for free agency on 2014. He was a National League All-Star the past two seasons.

Alfredo Aceves is throwing something/slamming doors somewhere right about now

Re: Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan
How would Hanrahan do in Boston? Sometimes small market NL stats don't fly in Boston. We went though that last year with Melancon. I think Hanrahan has better stuff, but its still a unknown what he would be able to do under the bright lights of Boston.

I personally like Hanrahan's stuff a whole lot. It is a question mark how he would do in Boston, but I see the interest they have as well.

The difference in stuff between Hanrahan and Melancon is huge.

Re: Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan
If the Pirates would take Salty and Morales or Aceves, the Sox should jump at it.

I know Hanrahan, and he's no Melancon. For sure. They should grab this guy when they can. Morales or Aceves would be good. He's one of the top 5 closers in the NL.

Anything to improve our overall pitching situation is something that I would back. I assume the Red Sox wouldn't make moves that would give us a surplus in the bullpen dept. while taking away from the rotation. Who knows.

Rumor is the Pirates want Doubront.
If that happens, I will be very upset.

31 year old reliever who's set to become a FA? I don't think the value is all that high there

Re: Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan
I would not trade Doubrant... Iggy is a definite maybe but i think the FO wants to put him in the minors for a lil while and see how he hits and its kinda his last shot to prove if he can be the SS of the future. Xander is clipping right on his heels. Also if Iggy was traded id rather see him in a package for a starting pitcher rather than a closer
Plus i would rather see the sox give Bailey a chance to see what hes got plus bring in Brain Wilson would would be cheaper than Hanrahan... if Bailey cant cut it have a closer by committee during the first half and then when Wilson is ready let him take over the nineth

Bailey will probably give us 40+ innings and a DL stint.
