Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
mlbtraderumors, so of course take it with a grain of salt. Now he says his first choice is going to New York, but as we know both New York teams are pretty much set at 3rd base.
A crapshoot dream for Sox to nab him yes, but that would be eventful.

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
Given the strong Dominican presence on the team, maybe he could be persuaded to come to Boston.

maybe.
or will Aramis be singing that 70's hit "Please come to Boston":
Please come to Boston to play for Tito,
The team has no pitching, but we could use your bat,
We trade away starters for fifth outfielders,
But the Front Office says they're going for a title soon,
Please come to Boston, he just said no,
I think there's better places to be.

I’m not sure if your post was meant to point out that pitching should be a priority instead, but if so, why should improving the offense be neglected? The team is clearly deficient in both areas. A Papi-Manny-Aramis 3, 4, 5 would be awesome.

Mike Lowell will also be entering his contract/age 35 season, whats the harm in acquiring a 29 year old pure sluggling 3rd baseman for 4 or 5 years? If said is actually possible, I can see Theo being crafty and still acquiring some good arms. Via trade like using Lowell as bait & using whats left of the available sources

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
Yeah, besides the pitching we need, we've also needed a solid 5th bat all season, and no one has stepped up to protect Manny. Youk belong's in the 2nd spot, Pena needs time, Varitek is here for defense, and Lowell's just not hittin jacks anymore.
Crisp
Youkilis
Ortiz
M. Ramirez
A. Ramirez
Pena
Varitek
Pedroia
Gonzalez
That's a pretty good lineup, but very top heavy, assuming we don't get the same season from Gonzalez, and Pedroia needing experience.

saw a thing on ESPN about him saying he wants to go to a contender.
my point was the Sox are not a contender without better pitching...thus if the guy is true to his word, he could opt to go elsewhere based upon the direction various teams seem to be going.
of course we've seen how guys say one thing and do another..i.e. Clemens (I wanna play closer to home) going to Toronto a few years back.

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
Injuries were the main cause for the Sox to freefall in the 2nd half. Now I am nowhere near counting the Sox out of the playoffs for 2007. On the free agent market for 07 the Sox are said to have high on their list: Julio Lugo, Matsuzaka, Jason Schmidt.
They might also take a flyer on Eric Gagne to assure Papelbon is placed in the rotation which would really solidify the starting staff. There is other good relief pitchers they could get through trade & free agency, i.e. Justin Speier of the Blue Jays

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
Wouldn't mind them signing Francisco Cordero to set up for our closer in '07. I wouldn't mind signing Meche either, and watching Lester develop out of the bullpen (Breslow and Lester would be nice to have as lefties).

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
The only place I have heard that the Sox are after Lugo is here. Lugo has had some run ins with the cops and some domestic violence problems and the fact that he isn't that great a defender makes me think he isn't in the sox plans at all. I will be very surprised if he signs in Boston. I think the sox want strong defense at shortstop and thats why I think A-Gon will likely be back. If the Angels want to unload Cabrera to make room for Wood, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox were in on that.
OuttheK's, Cordero is one of a couple guys I hope the sox bring in for the pen. That would be huge. I don't think Lester is in their 07 plans, if he does come back I don't think it will be as anything but a starter. I like Breslow a lot too.
The sox have to be in on a big time starter this offseason and maybe Meche too. There is absolutely no excuse for bombing two years in a row. They can absolutely be a contender next season. With Lester out of the picture though, I think it will mean the FO might have to spend more.

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
Gordon Edes, Nick Carfardo, Buster Olney, Tony Masarotti, and Ken Rosenthal have all said that the Sox still highly covet Lugo and will try to go hard for him this offseason.

Re: Aramis Ramirez to hit the open market after this season?
I don't buy it. I don't see him being their guy at all. Why spend more money on a lesser defensive shortstop when you can spend some of that money on a real problem like pitching and save a little bringing A-gon back in. The FO has made careless moves, they're not that careless. Unless they plan on really throwing a lot of money around this offseason, I don't see him being their guy at all.
