Marlins trade away Jorge Julio

Rockies acquired RHP Jorge Julio from the Marlins for RHP Byung-Hyun Kim.

 

Clearly, the Florida front office didn't have the same kind of confidence if Julio's ability to bounce back from a horrendous start that manager Fredi Gonzalez did. Julio can likely be safely dropped if you had him on reserve. Maybe the Rockies will have an opening in the closer's role if Brian Fuentes is moved this summer, but Julio would have to pitch a lot better than he has recently in order to have a chance of claiming it. He's a below average reliever and has been for years.

 

Other moves took place today, the Mariners got themselves a nice pick up in Jason Davis

 

Mariners acquired RHP Jason Davis from the Guardians for a player to be named.

 

Davis never figured it out in Cleveland, but he was well worth taking a chance on. He's 18-22 with a 4.69 ERA in 52 starts and 62 relief appearances as a major leaguer. Since there apparently were several teams in on him, the Mariners probably had to surrender a solid prospect in order to add him to their pen.

 

It took the Twins this long to figure it out??

Twins designated RHP Sidney Ponson for assignment.

 

He wasn't immediately replaced on the roster, but it looks like the Twins will call up Alexi Casilla or another position player until a fifth starter is needed on Saturday. It should be Kevin Slowey getting the nod in his place, but that's another thing the Twins have yet to announce a decision on. Ponson indicated that he plans to go home to Florida and sit out the rest of the season before deciding whether to resume his career.

First Marlins trade for Jorge Julio, now Benietez? True it worked out in the Julio deal since they swung him around to the Rockies for Kim, who has been a decent starter for them. If Benietez becomes a solid reliever he could be had in another trade like Julio.

 

Giants acquired RHP Randy Messenger from the Marlins for RHP Armando Benitez.

 

Messenger figures to go right into San Francisco's bullpen and join Vinnie Chulk in middle relief, with Kevin Correia occupying more of a setup role in front of Brad Hennessey. While he can't be completely ruled out as a candidate for saves, Messenger isn't a very good bet at all. His quality fastball-slider combination has allowed him to survive as a middle man, but he doesn't have the command to handle late-inning duties.
