you do not let a Jonathan Papelbon leave town at any cost, unless you're the Twins or the A's but certainly not when you have the money the Sox have. If Hansen develops into a lights out closer, then great but then you MAKE room for both by creating a situation like Texas had last year with Gagne and Otsuka. You can never have enough lights out arms in your bullpen

I'll be happy if Jonathan Papelbon is still a closer when he reaches free agency. His shoulder is very fragile: lots of closers like Paps have flamed out young.

Re: Tavarez DFA
I can pretty much guarantee that they will let Pap walk if he continues his dominance over the next 3 years AND they have a viable option to turn to within the organization. It makes perfect sense.

exactly why I hope Joba goes to the rotation and not the pen.

Just to follow up from the Boston Herald:
Julian Tavarez has accepted an outright assignment to Pawtucket after clearing waivers but don’t look for the veteran pitcher to remain there long. It appears that Tavarez only did so to allow the Sox some added time to complete a trade that will land him back in the big leagues sometime in the next few days.

Re: Tavarez DFA
Class move on his part. It seems like this organization really takes care of its players, asking Hinske if he would prefer to be traded and play full time some where else. Assuring Cora he would be the highest paid bench player. The examples go on, but I really like how they seem to have built a trust with their players and a reputation among players in general as a classy organization in that respect.

Re: Tavarez DFA
Tavarez has declined his assignment after initially accepting it and has become a FA.

I thought it was classy (and surprising for him to accept it) and I dont hate him for balking out of it. Goodluck wherever yoyo.

A little harsh for someone who bailed us out big time last year. The final stats may not have been allstar worthy, but he was an unsung hero last year nonetheless. He was pretty good for an extended period of time when we had injury issues in the starting rotation. He was bad this year, but also wasnt given much of a shot. I think he did pretty good here and deserves to go out better than "he fucking sucks". I am glad that he is no longer an option in the pen, but lets not forget what he did do for us last year in a pinch.

Re: Tavarez DFA
I've seen much worse in a Red Sox uni. I've got no gripe with Tavarez. He gave his best, shut his mouth, and he was a good team mate. He made some positive contributions on the field.

Yeah, but he was awful this year, and was not an integral part of the Red Sox.
