    Bard to the Pen?

Just read on ESPN that they are sending Bard to the bullpen. They need all the help they can get but Bard had one start and i think did really well considering everything? Anyone else agree?:dunno:

I personally think that the sooner Daniel Bard is put into a closer role, the sooner he can begin his journey into becoming an above average closer.

It's all about him avoiding any mental confusion as to whether or not he is a starter or a closer IMO.

He could be a good starter, or a good closer, the guy is a good pitcher either way. I just think that he should be a closer - sooner the better - I am excited at the prospect of Daniel Bard as a closer in say, 3 years...scary really - I think he could be as good as or better than Pap'b

They won't do that. Starters are more valuable than closers and start is what he wants to do. More importantly he is showing very good signs that he can do. He will be in the pen very likely the rest of the year and will start next year back in the rotation.

He was never going to be in the rotation this year longer than the time it took to get dice back. My only concern is that they cannot flip flop him in one season and given Buchs propensity for injury and the likelihood that Cook is not a long term answer, they will still be short arms even when dice comes back.

Once he makes the transition, he must stay there the rest of the yr. I am unsure if this is permanent or just something they are gonna do due to this PPD game.

It sounds lke a temporary move, but I would prefer they move him there for at least the rest of this year. He is a good reliever and an okay starter. It is still very, very early, but there have to be some changes made.

Bobby and owners were in meeting. This was their #1 issue likely. Sigh. I see Bard not being happy about this.

I would not be if I were him either. Worse than that it sounds more like they are flip flopping him willy nilly. What a mess this bunch is. Must be frustrated by missing casting call for Three Stooges movie.

So Cooke comes in and Bard into the pen.

It seems like a sensible thing to do.

The news is they are already announcing that he will be simply missing a start and will be going back to the rotation. Cook is still in Pawtucket. So they are already going to flip Bard once and then flop him back to the rotation, something I think they can only do one time until dice gets here and then they might shift Bard to the pen for the rest of the season. The issue with that in my view is that if they flip flop him a few times or even more than once and then even with dice they run out of arms...lets say when Buch has his usual mid summer injury....then what?

They should either bite the bullet and announce him to the pen for the rest of the season or leave him in the rotation. Letting him pitch a couple of innings in order to fill this gap since he missed his start yesterday is fine but that is in fact what they have been announced. In fact what the said specifically is that Bard will either pitch on the side to fill the gap between starts or pitch a couple of innings out of the pen.

...which makes you wonder about the state of the management on the Red Sox. Bard must feel like a bowling ball.

So hes going to miss his next start. but dice's return is still unknown and they are in desperate need of some help in the pen. Has anyone heard when Cook is supposed to come up. I see we got Byrd in now are we willing to start some trade talks with possible pick up a relief pitcher for maybe an outfielder?

    Re: Bard to the Pin?

Seems to me that Bard will be in the pen temporarily. Valentine speaks pretty highly of him starting, and doesn't seem to want to give him up in that role.

I guess it all remains to be seen however..

    Oh, and 500th post!

Spit in the ocean. THe problem is bigger than who the closer is or isn't.
If history tells us anything, the path to redeption for any bad baseball team is marked with a deep rotation of durable starters, a world class defense in both infield and outfield, a lineup that can generate runs in more than one way, a bullpen that won't steal defeat from the jaws of victory, and a top end catcher to hold the whole package together. These are the conditions by which victory is achieved, anything that does not accomplish these objectives is a waste of resources.
