Predictions for Robinson Cano ... Team & Terms of Contract.

Not sure if I am breaking any rules here bringing up the evil empire in a Sox Forum. But they are and always will be our arch enemy so I thought it was something we all can have some fun with. First off ... Is Cano delusional? Because it seems like he is delusional and that alone should hurt his value.
Cano turned 31 in October and wants a 10 Year $310 Millllion contract. One would have to believe that he has 3-4 more years like his 2013 season in him.

Over the last 4 season Cano has averaged a WAR of 7. I have read that each WAR of 1 = 5M. To Justify a 10 year $300+ contract he would need to average a WAR of 6. Ten years is a long time but in reality a WAR value of 1 should be worth more in 8-10 years then it is today. Am I right about this? One thing that Cano has going for him is his position and team. The Red Sox had no problem extending Pedey to age 38. Cano provides more power than Pedey and Yankee Stadium is made for him so he can easily transition to DH in ages 37+. The Yankees are on record today ... Randy Levine said that no way are the Yankees doing a 10 year deal.

My prediction is that Cano will sign an 8 year deal with the Yankees at average annual value of 31M per for a total of $248M. In the end the Yankees will try not to bid against themselves but at the same time they need Cano to sell tickets and make the team competitive. It also hurts that the Sox won the World Championship in 2013. The Yankees are in bad shape to be forced into another ARod type of contract but I do not see anyway out for them.

$310 million is a joke! Cano will stay with the $pankees because no one else is going to pay him anything close to what he is asking for. I hope they do give him a ten year contract which turn into another Arod contract.

If the Yankees are smart they can get him for 180M. There's no market for Cano. No team that needs a second has the money to pay for him. Unless the Dodgers swoop in and snag him but I just can't see it.

I'll go with Houston as a darkhorse. They can definitely afford an 8/200 contract, they have tons of pitching (Appel,Mccullers,Foltynewicz, and will be drafting rodon #1 this year) that will be ready 2015.

I think the Yankees are in a lose-lose situation with Cano. Unless they can trade for a Brandon Phillips or Ian Kinsler, they will be obligated to meet or come close to Cano's demands. I hope they have to sign the guy to a ten-year contract and are stuck with another bad contract.

I can never understand how anyone outside of New York can possibly be a fan of the Yankees. I feel pretty much the same way about the Cardinals.

Brandon Phillips is not a good player anymore while Kinsler is good and theoretically available. Cano goes back to the Yanks - he is their best option still.

Cardinals - lot of old history, especially before baseball went westward.

I don't see him going for any less than 220.

He's too good of a player, and he is about as healthy as they come. He has averaged above 160 games a year. In the last four years, he has been #3, #6, #4 and #5 for the MVP. Several All-star nominations, several gold gloves-- at a premium position. Plenty of playoff experience. Being a Yankee makes him much more famous and marketable than smaller market players. His L/R splits aren't any concern.

I am usually pretty adamant about avoiding long term deals, but he's the kind of guy you want to dish one out for. After year 5, the contract will hurt like a bitch, but it is what it is.

He is a terrific athlete and has good hitting skills - his back end will be overpaid, but more than likely overpaying fringy All-Star level production than overpaying a replacement level stiff. Obviously the risk in a long deal is his ability to avoid injury and such - but the percentages are with him given past and such.

I read a blog today where Cano's agent had a big pow-wow with the Mets----who most certainly need at least another big bat in their lineup and now have the money to spend. If the Mets had guts enough they could run up the score to at least drive the Yankees price higher or outbid them and get Cano for themselves. It would really set that New York rivalry on its head. Alas, it's the Mets and when it comes to in fighting they have all the guts of a chocolate éclair.
