Cashman seems like he was in the same boat last year as Cherrington was in 2011 -- a guy with no money to spend, and no great solutions. Then the team's top brass blows their wad on big name players, lose a pile of first round draft picks, and hurt their own depth in the process.

It doesn't seem like Cashman led the charge this offseason, too splashy and messy.

Despite their spending, the Yankees are still old and full of question marks. Their pitching has been improved a bit by Tanaka, but their infield is questionable and their outfield is crowded with 30-something question marks. Cashman built a team that accepted very high dollar contracts while Cherington systematically built a team constructed of reasonably priced players who were well meshed to win.

If the Yankees don't win in 2014, Cashman should be replaced.
their OF is a definite strength

knocking an OF of gardner, johnny jr while rotating bethran & soriano between OF and DH

kinda ruins the rest of a reasonable post

Soriano is a few years away from going to bed at 9PM and watching daytime court shows at high volume. His stats would probably be HOF-worthy if he hadn't lost a couple years to service in the Korean War. Beltran had a good season, but given recent history it's very reasonable to label him a "question mark". In the last five seasons, he's only played over 100 games three times, and almost all of his stats show a decline over the last six or seven seasons. He's also not getting any younger. Brett Gardner is an asset to the team in the field and not too much of a detriment to the lineup, but he's also not powering baseballs out of the park on a regular basis, despite playing in a stadium that is only slightly larger than the trunk of a Volvo.

Our OF will generate a significant amount of wins. Beltran in RF in the Stadium will be able to hide some of his defensive inconsistencies, but at his age and with his injury history, he is definitely a questionmark. Soriano will see little time in the OF, mostly against lefties. But Ells and Gardner should have 10 wins between them.
    Hal sucks

If they can both play a full season, which is more of a certainty with Gardner than it is with Ellsbury.
    We miss you Mike.

I can barely believe it, but Ellsbury has produced 100+ runs exactly one time in his career, and that was his mvp#2 season. He has come close plenty of times, but the only time he was over it, he drove himself in 32 times.

Who cares that Soriano can hit 30 HR's if he can't get on base? Power without on-base ability is like a pair of huge biceps on a figure skater. Your point about Beltran is nonsense. His knee issues are chronic and he's missed time for them on a near-yearly basis. He's not making it up. Gardner is very good, period, but he's playing LF even though he's a better CF than Ellsbury, who has his own question marks.

Take off the rose-colored glasses. Oh, and "LOL X 3"
    We miss you Mike.

    Cashman's Expectation:
We think Tanaka has the potential to be a # 3 starter.

    LOL SERIOUSLY?

You pay a pitcher the 5th largest contract for a potential # 3 starter? Funny stuff Cashman.

You think that's funny, Jacko thinks he's a #4 LMFAO. Then when CC and Kuroda slow down, he'll be the first to claim he was an ace. Just wait until midseason, Jacko is in for a big ass plate of crow.
Hating the Yankees like it's a religion since 94'

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT : Mind your own fucking business if a conversation doesn't concern you and maybe we can start acting like adults.

RDFFL---Listen carefully to this my young colleague....IF THE RED SOX TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS AND PLAY TO THEIR ABILITY WE WILL NOT HAVE TO CONCERN OURSELVES WITH THE YANKEES AT ALL!!!!!!!!! This is one time that cliche "the ball is in our court" make total common sense.

No it doesn't...baseball is played on a field. "Court" makes no sense at all!

    stop misconstruing ;-)

Cashman indicated that comments he made earlier in the day, when he told ESPN-Radio Tanaka should be viewed as a No. 3 starter, were misconstrued.

“The question was whether I thought [Tanaka] would be at the front of the rotation right out of spring training,” Cashman said. “I said that I didn’t expect that. You’re talking about the adjustment, transition, growing pains. We look for him to be a solid No. 3, and after that if it’s better than that, great.”

Yanks GM hesitant to call Sabathia an ace
